Yea, I was going to say, wasn't he 6-1 when he was drafted?

Yeah I think so. Just checked Minnesota's website and he is in fact listed at 6-3 206 there, so I guess he's grown.

One period done. His game is pretty easy to sum up. His skating really is incredible. He is very fast and has a great stride, but his edge work and change of direction ability is what are most unbelievable. He's just so quick.

He also looks very big out there. His positioning has been flawless thus far and he is aggressive in stepping up to pressure at the blueline. He has a very active stick that he has used effectively and he has been surprisingly physical throwing a few hits and winning battles along the boards. He is just very good defensively.

Outlet passes are crisp but outside of carrying the puck through the neutral zone a few times and then dumping, he hasn't tried too much to get involved in transition offense.

Minnesota wins 1-0. Got a chance to see Skjei a bit more on offense in the 3rd, as he got about a minute of PP time. He definitely has a big time shot, but he almost looked nervous offensively. He was rushing things a bit and put an open pass into the skates of his teammate. 2 very good shots on net though. Once he gets more confidence in this area his game there will improve because the ability is clearly there.

I hadn't seen him in a while, and bottom line, he's on the top pairing, top PK unit and was on the ice for the entire last minute when MSU had the goalie pulled in a 1-0 game.

What we have here is the number 1 defenseman on the number 1 team in the nation. Absolutely nothing to be disappointed about with his development.

Yeah definitely. He's clearly bigger and stronger now.

He's more Staal than McD to me. Granted, I've only seen him in the WJC.

Yeah that's a great comparison for his style of play, positioning, and stick use. He just skates a lot better, not to say that Staal isn't a good skater himself.

Either way it looks like we have another good guy working his way through the system.

I'm really hoping he develops in to a McDonagh-lite. He looked VERY good on the defensive end of things at the WJC's. I watched him kill off a 5-on-3 pretty much by himself, and he didn't look even remotely gassed at the end of it. Skated to the bench like it was all in a day's work, and went right back out there. I know we drafted him for his skating and good size, and I'm happy that's the road we seem to be taking with our defensemen picks of late. Big, mobile dudes, which is what you need to have a successful top 6 nowadays. I think the Derian Hatchers of the world have been almost completely phased out.

So anyway, it all starts with good skating, and this kid sounds like he has that in spades. Take some time to develop, get some experience, learn a little more and he could be a very functional 2nd or 3rd pairing guy with multiple uses.

Tonight at 9 on the Big Ten Network, Skjei and Minnesota will be taking on Nieves and Michigan. Rare opportunity to see both prospects at once.

Sadly, only one of them is actually worth watching this season

Skjei with an assist tonight and an all around good game.

Skjei vs Nieves on ESPNews right now with Buccigross calling the game.

Skjei just scored the first goal of the game on a beautiful play. He gloved down a clearing attempt at the blueline and immediately fired a quick shot that beat the goaltender.

Minnesota getting killed tonight, but Skjei just scored another one, this time on a nice wrister from the slot on a nice feed as he was cutting to the net.

Skjei scores yet again beating the goalie on a low wrister from the circle. He's playing superb hockey right now.

Any chance he signs after this year? Or is he more likely to stay at Wisconsin?
