Just checking in, at a friends house stealing wifi. Power has been good but still no cable and cablevision refuses to give us an estimate on when we are getting fixed. Guess its a lot better than those without power still but we are one of the only houses in our town that havnt had their services fully restored yet.

Do you have cablevision? I heard they are out all over the place. The guy at the pizza place aroun the block from me said that he kept pulling the card in and out and got it to work after a couple of tries. I have Fios and we got everything back when the power came back, good luck.

He also said on Ocean Parkway, all of the East bound lanes are destroyed except for one lane. My friend was told that they are thinking about charging people again to use Ocean Parkway to get the funds to rebuild it. They haven't charged for that in almost 50 years, if not longer. It's sad to hear that it is that bad over there.

Today in Long Beach, NY, ripping up my friend's hardwood floor.

Still a long way to go to rebuild. I love this town; Really heartbreaking.

According to my friend the water was up to chest high where the ocean met the bay. His first floor is already raised 3 feet off the ground, in one of the higher parts of the Long Beach West End. But not enough. The drywall has been removed to where it was affected by water ... about 6 ft off the ground level.

Recent new code. All new construction has to have first floors above garage level.

The bottom of the fireplace is 3 ft off the ground, and a further 4 ft of dry wall and floor and everything else is removed. Fuck that stufff was nailed down like a bastard, sealed tight as a camel's ass in a sandstorm, but water still got under.

As far as this town it concerned, it might as well have been Katrina.

There was a brick bathhouse down the end of the road on the beach. The ocean did not leave a brick in place. Gone.

Passing by some of my favorite surf spots of the past, I saw ground level garages filled with ruined cars still in place. Motorbikes and cars on the street, still in place, ruined.

It is amazing how high the water came up here, almost like a tidal wave. Every house in the residential areas seemed to have their insides ripped out and deposited on the sidewalk. And it's a shit-ton of work to do that.

Other demolition work lesson learned: an industrial strength 20# 4 foot long crowbar, if you don't mind handling that much steel, makes work faster. Won't need to go to the gym until thursday at least.

I did the same today at my grandmothers house in Island Park, NY. So sad. My grandparents are going to put the house up after these past 2 storms. They've been there for 50 years.

New Jersey rollercoaster submerged by Sandy may stay put

The mayor of Seaside Heights has suggested the spectacularly submerged rollercoaster that fell off Casino Pier should stay put as a unique tourist attraction and one day as a memorial of what happened and a testament that New Jersey had to rebuild. Very, very cool idea and I'd definitely go see this.
