Carp: Rangers in the Market for a Goalie?

I'm still going to be really surprised if we don't trade that pick.

We sure as hell need a skilled RW, Josh

If Rick DiPietro is available we draft him, right?

The fuck is Carp on here with "skilled RW"?

We have three of them right now on the team, two of them can't legally drink, and we're going to draft another one?

There are three acceptable outcomes with this pick:

1 - Trade it away as part of a package deal for a now player

2 - Trade it away for assets to get the now player.

3 - Trade down and get L'Heureux

I think you make the pick. In a year like this, the #15 is as good as the 8th. They don't have a clue as to what is what is normal years, in a year like this it's a total crapshoot.

Doesn't the reverse also hold true that the 15th might be just as good as the 23?

No immediate help will come of this pick. We need immediate. If we can't get immediate, embrace the crapshoot and draft a super unique skillset and shit disruption specialist.

...and all options point to "TRADE"...yup G!

I'll take what's behind Door #1, Monte!!! (WOW! that's old!) ;)

Sometimes a goalie in the first is the right call -- Fleury, Price, Rask, Varlamov, Vasilevskiy -- but most of them are swing and a miss. Remember how highly-touted Jack Campbell was? Jake Oettinger? Pascal Leclaire? Chet Pickard?

I'd rather not. Just sign a backup. I'd sooner give Halak tandem money than draft a goalie at 16.

Exactly. The five that you mentioned above are the only consistent starters drafted over the last 16-17 years out what 20-25 1st round picks? With that kind of success ratio, I mean why even bother.

Did he put a question mark at the end of the article just incase the whole things bullshit?

If the Rangers were in the market for a goalie I don’t think it’s the worst thing but a first round goalie is a bitter pill to swallow. To me that’s a wasted pick, and that’s coming from a former goalie.

Yeah, drafting a goalie in the first round is not the move here.

Shesty will be solid if unspectacular. Again, not going to win you many games on his own, but probably not going to lose you any games either. That's all well and good, they shouldn't overpay him for what he did in the KHL.

A key to winning in the playoffs is not giving up a weak goals, and rarely can a goalie win you a Stanley Cup as we saw against the Kings, and even this year with Price not being able to do anything against Tampa.

Dubnyk, Schneider, Ward, Lehtonen, and DiPietro (let's be real, he was GREAT before he just couldn't stay healthy) all had at least a few pretty damn good years. Samsonov, Oettinger, Askarov, and Knight - the jury is still out. Jack Campbell is...decent, I guess.

It's still a bad idea to spend a high pick on a goalie.

Not going to split hairs over it; but if you are looking at the last 16-17 years,Dubnyk, Schneider, Ward, Lehtonen, and DiPietro are all just outside of that window; and the 5 have either not held down a starting job for more than a year or two, or are still developing.

Bottom line is that we agree; odds are much better focusing on best player available in forwards and defensemen to get value from the pick.

16. New York Rangers: Fedor Svechkov, C, Togliatti-VHL

I suspect any of the top centers that are available at No. 16 — be it Svechkov, Sillinger or Lucius — would be the guy for the Rangers, but I’ve also heard Othmann at this spot. Teams think the Rangers would be a possible destination for one of the top goalies if one is still around.

Probably smoke.. but Carp isn;t on an island here I'm guessing.

I think Carp is having a boomer moment. How are drafting an 18-year old goalie and signing a FA to be better coverage than Georgiev/Kinkaid related? Completely different scenarios. I see why both are possible, though we do have some goalies in the system and our starter is 25 years old with inconsistent but promising performances. I can't remember if it's another thread or this one, but please FFS focus on adding pure talent in the draft. Preferably at forward. More preferably at center. But we've accumulated all this talent that we can allegedly trade for our current needs. Hope it happens, and hope it continues to happen.

I think it's less a commentary on our needs and more a commentary on how highly touted these goalies are. Wallstedt was something like a legit threat to go top 5 for a while in this draft, and Cossa's been dominant. It's possible that they're BPA by quite a bit in the minds of many scouts by pick 13 or so.

I'm just not sure the logistics on asset management on that. Would either of those hold high value as a trade chip? When they're NHL ready, does Shesterkin have trade value on the market? Would selecting a forward or defenseman in that spot have potential better returns in a trade or for the roster since there's more spots available?

I'd be upset if we still have pick #15(16) come draft pick time.

If we do have it though, its not the end of the world if we take a goalie, especially if we feel strongly that that goalie will be #1 goalie quality (of course, these things are tough to predict. But just like several high goalie picks bust, so do position players picked in the first)

end of the day, theoretically, we won't even see the first rounder goalie on our roster for another 4-5 years. This is a long term play. Who knows what things will look like then. It's ever a bad idea to have good goaltending depth, especially if you think a goalie is your BPA with that pick

was mentioned earlier in this thread though. I'd definitely be fine with trading down and acquiring more assets if you are unsure of what to do at 15

Lining up for the Rangers to take a goalie? Looks like the 2 goalies that have been projected to go in the first 15-20 picks in a lot of mocks are still there.

But I'm guessing Carp doesn't have shit anymore. He lost whatever link/source he had with the front office.
