Trouba Suffers Suspected Concussion; Out for Remainder of Season

Sounds like a good way to win some fights and lose some hockey games. Does Tampa have a real bruiser on the blue line?

No, but Tampa isn't even close to small. There's no one under 6'1 on their entire blue line. Cernak and Schenn take no shit. Neither does Foote.

The average height of their top 8 games played D is 6’3 and average weight is 223 lbs so yeah I do think we are getting pretty exposed if you lose a Trouba since he is our heaviest d to play against.

I will say this. I’m almost willing to apologize a bit to Trouba because we do, as others have said, look very naked without him there. I still think he’s overpaid but not nearly as much as I though considering how important he is when we play those bigger teams.

I’m not even like super high on the guy I’m suggesting but I think if we are going to be without Trouba, it would be nuts to throw another smaller type player out to the wolves in these “heavier” games this late in the season

Anyway, anyone that wants to read on the dude that is 6’4 220 here ya go

unfortunately, no. It's too late.

Like I've been repeating the last few weeks, this is something that should have been addressed at the start of the season. We knew this team was incredibly soft. Usually, you get guys that can contribute in such way to get their feet wet, so when it comes to important games at the end of the season, you a.) know the can play and fill the role, b.) they arent in a new environment to play their first NHL game

I'm not at all interested in adding Geertsen to the mix. You'd be adding him for the sake of grit and nothing else. What's the point of having a Stu Bickel-like defender who you probably can't trust to play over 10 minutes at the NHL level? Calling up Geertsen is a poor reflexive move that doesn't make the team any better.

That’s fair. I think it’s more along the lines of whoever you bring in, it’s going to be no

NHL experience, or Bitetto and Hajek at the same time. The thing about Geertson is he is a grunt. The part we miss most about Trouba is the grunt part of his game so I guess that’s the fit. Likely Smith takes over Troubas role which I’m fine with, but then you need Smiths spot filled and he also is a grunt, so.....

Or we could throw Jones in the mix and hope teams fighting for their playoff lives or NHL careers take it easy on the kid.

I means yes and no. I don’t 100% disagree with you but we likely are talking about the 6th or so spot being filled with Smith stepping into a Trouba role moreso and with no actual 4th line, no real toughness on the blue line unless you count Lindgren absorption ability, I’d just rather give physicality a chance over another smallish player right now.

If the job is to play defense, I'd rather the kid who was playing top pairing on the recent NCCAA champs as opposed to the guy who's a complementary face puncher. Are you trying to win these last ten games at all or just send a message? If you're trying to win I play Jones over Geertsen 10/10.

I guess. I don’t take too much stock on NCAA minutes to always translate against grown men but there are some that do for sure. The thing is though, Jones wouldn’t be playing the type of minutes suited for his game really. I guess I’d rather have a physical stay at home defense that has been in the minor pro game for a few years. Yes I’m trying to win games. That’s a big ask for a 20 year old smaller player with 0 pro experience that is mainly an offensive minded guy on the smaller side to go in now.

Guilty as charged, your honor!!

Where's the line form for this one?

Jones isn't some powerplay specialist. We need to tear down that narrative because I've seen it among a few posters here, not just you. To say that he's mainly offensive-minded is disingenuous because that doesn't really describe his game. His offensive game is his stronger suit but it isn't definitive of his game. His game is reliant on two factors: his brain and his skating. Scott Wheeler recently did a fantastic job breaking down Jones' game in an Athletic article particularly highlighting his relationship with his defensive partner Matt Kessel.

Coincidentally, Jones’ D partner at UMass, Matt Kessel (No. 4), is also a player whose game functions at the other end of the spectrum vis-a-vis Jones’. In my review, despite all that has been said about Jones’ ability to create offence, Kessel was actually the more aggressive, offensively engaged of the two. He’s constantly looking to attack and force the issue and it was often Jones who operated as his safety valve.

But at the end of the year, Jones had outproduced his partner 24-23 in 29 games. And it’s because Kessel’s activity masks at times for effectiveness, whereas Jones’ game is all about movement and timing.

Kessel looks much more involved, but Jones’ understanding of the game in front of him is on a different level.

TLDR; Jones is offensively gifted but he looks to make the safe and headier play. Those plays themselves limit defensive chances against. I'd highly recommend reading the article if you have an Athletic subscription and if you're not as familiar with Jones' game.

So basically he's Fox 2.0?

I can dig that....

I'm looking forward to seeing him play!

That's the hope!

When evaluating Jones, he compares more favorably to players like Fox and Torey Krug. He's even mentioned that Krug is someone he emulates. I feel like there are some who are expecting a Tony DeAngelo or Shayne Gostisbehere and he's neither of those players.

From the scouting report you posted, it sounds like he's a pretty decent defender...We can always use that...especially a smart one!

All of that is great but I'm not sure that changes anything of what in saying. Without Trouba there is a specific void that neither Jones, Fox, or Fox 9.0 fills.

I understand that. You said, "The thing is though, Jones wouldn’t be playing the type of minutes suited for his game really." Which I don't agree with. There isn't any expectation that Jones can fill in for Trouba as a physical presence but he can surely pick up his defensive assignments. To say that Jones is simply an offensive defenseman discredits what he can offer defensively. Geertsen, while physical, offers nothing else that Jones can't especially if you're down a player like Trouba.

Fair enough. I just think it’s the wrong move with Trouba out but I’ll be happy to be wrong. I just saw how intimidated we looked sans Trouba and if any team wants to, they can take some liberties if they have the right personnel.

Trouba is the only guy who throws a meaningful hit and makes guys keep their head up or should on a pretty consistent basis. I don't think anybody is afraid of him dropping the gloves, completely agree there. I'm not protesting his value vs. his contract but the team is babyshit soft and he's basically the one guy who resembles a old school defender when it comes to playing physical. If you want to count Smith sure, I guess for a 7th D.

I think we'll miss this kind of edge.

This is the only memorable hit in his tenure.

I actually don't think he's a player that makes other people keep their head up at all.

I hate to do it because I hate this stat, but I have to do the per60 thing because he's missed so much time with injury, but he's sixth on the team and hits per 60. That's behind PDG, Gaut, and JMFJ.

He's 38th in the NHL... behind.... MDZ... Near Erik Johnson.

Sorry, I'm just not buying that he's this overly physical player that the team depends on. If the team depends on him to be the physical presence, they've got big problems.

Meh. You need talent. Geerston is an AHL lifer. He's in his 5th/6th pro year and hasn't stepped foot on NHL ice. I'm not playing that guy. Bitetto is where you draw the line. The drop off in basic ability IMO takes over as necessity in choosing who you play right now.

This is kinda why I was thinking Vatanen would have been a good waiver pick up. He's serviceable in a top 4 role in a pinch. We're in that pinch.
