What is Going on with the Defense?

What is our defense doing tonight? The defense (besides Miller and Fox) is basically a big piece of Swiss Cheese in front of Georgie

1. WTF was Lindgren doing on that goal in front of the net? Staring into Outer Space? Just clear the Damn Puck. That was a free goal for New Jersey.

2. Johnson Sucks. This was the crap that Penguins fans warned us about: Johnson is a massive liability on the defensive side of the ice and is only known for shoving players after they score goals.

So, what are your ideas for dealing with the defense come the Trade Deadline?

It was too easy to blame Ruff, and avoid looking at the HC. No structure.

Exactly. Too many people were blaming Ruff instead of Gorton & Co. for not giving him the proper personnel, and wasn't he a defensive forward? Why didn't Quinn have him with the Forwards?

They can't fix this at the deadline. Trouba is like two games away from being Redden reborn and is signed until 3284 and their best hope is literally hope — prospects with no NHL track record we are desperately banking will make quick impacts.

The team's D depth goes:

Fox

Fifty feet of shit

Everyone else

One simple thing; Fox/Lindgren was a solid pair last year. At a minimum, put them back together and leave them alone.

I never said Ruff was good. I'm focused on the fact that the Rangers look none the better on defense and Ruff isn't here. So what's the problem now?

What's the problem? The goalie couldn't catch a cold tonight. Literally he couldn't catch the puck. Two of those goals are unforgivable. He was swimming in the crease on goal 4. They only gave up 28 shots coming off a game where they gave up ZERO high scoring chance opportunities.

Game 1, Shesterkin was a shooter tutor = Loss.

Game 2, Georgiev was fine = Win

Game 3, Georgiev forgot his gear at home = Loss.

I absolutely do not buy this defense sucks narrative. The goalies need to give the team a chance to win by not letting the first shot of the game go in the net.

Hopefully Shesterkin can take the next opportunity and run with it because the team, quite frankly only needs average goaltending to win games.

I actually think their goalie stole that one last night, fellas. Yeah, our defense looked shitty, but it's only game 3 after not playing for a long time. A lot of these guys hardly even know one another. I'm gonna give it 10 games before I can really make a judgement on what's going on out there.

Trouba is not looking very 8 million dollar-like, I agree...He had more turnovers than Pillsbury last night, but I think he's going to come around. Johnson reminds me of Staal, and it makes it an easier decision to bring in a promising prospect to take his spot.

I liked what I saw in K' Andre Miller though! He was looking pretty confident out there last night. Good skating to clear the puck, and fairly heads up in his own zone. From what I saw, his coverage was pretty solid, and he didn't get caught out of position. I'd like to see him shoot more from the point, but he'll get there.

We did get 50 shots on a fairly decent defensive team. Georgie had a tough night, but they'll rebound. I think it's gonna be what Vodka said; a "Jeckyl and Hyde-type" year.

Miller is in his first season, Lindgren in his 2nd season, Fox & DeAngelo are not defensive specialists, Johnson is old, Smith is a winger.

We knew this D corps wasnt going to be outstanding. We thought the offensive was going to be outstanding, but here we are with PDG with the same amount of points as Zibanejad and Smith has as many points as Kreider.

I think the offense will begin to click in time, Josh man. There's just too much talent up there and I just think they'll be fine.

I'm not sure what Quinn was thinking by splitting up Lindgren and Fox; maybe it's due to Tony D not being in last night, but I think they should keep those 2 together. I also think Smith is done here after this season anyway, so whatever we get outta him is a plus.

Fox is looking like our Power Play quarterback and doing a super job, I think. Trouba has to get his shit together, and I think if/when he does, we'll see a bigger improvement.

I'd like to see Fox, Trouba, and ADA actually get a partner and actually play more than 2 periods with said partner. Perhaps some continuity between the pairs might help? Just a thought.. but what to I know.

I think you have the right theory, Flynn. I simply think we need to play some more games to get some continuity. Three games is no sample size...not for this team. No camp or exhibition games aside, this team hardly knows one another, and many of them are 1st or second year players with very little experience.

I swore I would be patient with these guys and also with Quinn, and I'm going to stick to it.

Trouba is off to a rough start and I believe HE is the guy that has to help make this happen. There's a lot of belief in him at the top, that's why they threw that 8 million balloons at him. We're not going to win or lose games because of guys like Jack Johnson either, so I'm not going to beat his ass into the turf. He's our 7th or 8th defenseman, and that's what I expect from him.

But we do have a pair that works and I think Fox/Lindgren should be a staple of this defense.

The offense, I feel is not going to be an issue. They just need to play together more. We have so much talent up there, and once it gets clicking, they're going to fill the net. The concern is keeping pucks out of our own net!

Its still pre season. Relax. Let's not be too down on players. The coaching is suspect though. Enough with the constant line shuffling and the over reaction to how the kids play.

Its too damn early to make examples of players, when they haven't played enough hockey to get a feel for anything.

THIS. Let the guys learn the habits of their partner. Practice isn?t a game. Only game time can help this.

Also why is JJ still in the lineup? He has been as bad as advertised so far but come Friday, we bring DeAngelo back and pull Smith out and not JJ? Smith has been decent so far.

JJ brings everyone else on the ice with him down too because of his poor decisions. Yet we continue to not only play him, but stick him on the penalty kill.

Yea, never thought I'd be rooting for Smith to be in the lineup over someone else but its 2021 and times are crazy

I'm hearing in my head, pundit commentary about how is takes a young D-man 'several years' to grow and become proficient and efficient in their role. Are we forgetting that or has the paradigm shifted? #oldschool or just #oldthinking

I'm not looking to make excuses but am wondering if our collective expectations are just too damn high.

The thing is though the young D has looked fine. Fox has been great since his first game here. Lindgren had a bad game but is usually really steady. Miller was shaky in the first game but has looked legit ever since. Tony isnt a great defenseman but makes up for it offensively.

This isnt a development/young core issue, this is a bad defensive signings/veteran issue. I hated the Trouba signing when we made it and he has done nothing to prove me wrong. The guy is a good physical 3rd pair defenseman who needs a steady partner to not look foolish on a daily basis. Wont even get into how stupid Smith & Johnson were because they have been rehashed.

Edit: In my opinion we dont have a legit #1 defense partner for Fox who can defend well. We may in 3-5 years but right now its lacking.

I wish we would play Kakko on his natural side! I know he's a lefty shot, as is Laffy...I know, this is a question for Quinn, but why would we be playing these kids on a strange side or off wing?

Honestly as easy as it is to blame Quinn this roster is just oddly built. Cant even really blame Gorton because he lucked out with Kakko and Laf who both happen to play the same positions, as do two of the longest signed Rangers. No matter how you configure this line up something is off
