Well, if we make a pretty direct comparison since you assume he's 3rd pairing, he's basically taking the place of Marc Staal. He played nearly 18 minutes per game, which is probably what JJ plays. That's..........problematic.
Probably closer to Lindgren's 16+ a night that Staal's 18. Lindgren will play more.

split the difference and say 17. Still too much for a dumpster fire. I can overlook Kakko's analytics because of age, new ice surface, adjustments to a new game ,etc. I cant look past a 33 year old that likely no one else wanted anyway.
I don't buy 17, really.

If I had to take out a crystal ball, I'd say he splits games with Miller and plays no more than 15/gm in sheltered situations.

Staal played 17:39 per night, 14:51 minutes per of ES, and 2:44 per night of PK.

He won?t be replacing Staals minutes.

and 40 of the Penguins games last year JJ played 2m+ of pk time and 48 the year before.

If you compare that to Staal, last year Staal had 36 games of 2m+ SH time. 52 the year before. They are nearly identical.

I just dont see how they didn't sign JJ and say "we have our Staal replacement" when, although very different players, play the same position, same pairing, and under Martin, JJ previously trusted to play more than just a sheltered 7th d role. Yes Quinn makes the decisions, but Martin was in charge of the PK in Pitt. I doubt he would all of a sudden change his stance on the guy when he likely lobbied for JJ in the first place.

JJ played over his head because Doumolin was hurt.

76 games the year before and he still was on the pk for a good chunk.

Look, we can spin tires all day I guess and we aren't going to agree. I think this signing was a Staal repalcement and I think he will be used for a lot more than 12m per game sheltered. It is what it is. We can just see if and when the season ever starts.

The year before isn't relevant and I never said 12 minutes. So there! [emoji14]

We have 3 PP specialists in D who will get time before him. So there is almost 3 minutes you can shave off.

Not consistently, no. The whole point here is they're almost certainly going to play him, in the same way they did other bad players like Staal and Girardi.

Other bad players like Staal and Girardi?

Those two guys were #1 and #2 dmen on a team that went to the ECF 3 out of 4 years. Yes, they slipped toward the end of their careers here but I'm not sure naming these guys proves the rangers play "bad" players.

What was the alternative to playing Staal and Girardi at their tail-ends? Moving them was difficult, and scratching them was unlikely. Johnson is completely unlike their situation. You aren't hampered by an NMC or prohibitive salary should you need to bury him, and he doesn't have a history with the team you're not trying to shit on.

I'm talking about them at the end. Staal was scratched what, three times in the last two or three seasons? The idea that "if they're bad enough, they'll sit," flies in the face of the reality of Quinn.

Okay so Staal was benched, but you'd have liked to see him benched more? For who? Who's ready to play NHL defense that was available last season?

You're assuming a lot based on news that's 12 hours old. We don't know who else, if anyone, they're looking to bring in. If no one, we don't know which rookies are ready. If no rookies are ready, we don't know how they'll use Johnson. You're assuming that because he's signed he has to play but if anyone has proven contracts don't mean shit, it's the Rangers. Just look at the list of players they're paying NOT to be here.

PLUS, his contract is pennies compared to Staal and Girardi. He can be cut mid season and never heard from again with no strings attached.
