Is there a reason people keep bringing up Brodin so much? was there some rumor or indication that we are interested in this soft bum?

A - Minn has a plethora of D which they are said to be willing to move for needed forward talent. See: Buch and Strome as NHL ready help, + futures.

2 - This 'soft bum' is an excellent positionally sound defender capable of eating 20+ minutes a night. But I get it. You don't like defenders that don't hit. So you want to trade Trouba who had nearly twice as many hits as the next closest Rangers D.

Brodin - Trouba would be an high quality top pair especially with some good new structure behind them. If they keep DeAngelo around, Brodin is a positionally sound dman that could cover for all DeAngelo's mistakes.

You have to look at hits/60 stat http://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?report=realtime&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20192020&seasonTo=20192020&gameType=2&position=D&playerPlayedFor=franchise.10&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=hitsPer60&page=0&pageSize=50. But Trouba's physical play is not the reason why I want to trade him.

I just don't understand defensemen that don't hit, or people that want to trade for those defensemen and think those defensemen are top pairing Dmen.

Hitting means you don't have the puck. From a physical standpoint, I care more about guys clearing the crease than racking up hits.

Bordin. 1.64 hits/60 last year

Is John Carlson a top pair D? 1.94 hits/60. Josi 1.75, Suter 1.69, Karlsson 1.13, Keith 1.04, Pietrangelo 1.66, Werenski 1.42, Giordano 1.75, Heiskanan 1.48. All these coaches must be crazy playing all these soft dudes 23+ minutes a night.

Does Brodin score as many points as those Dmen?

Now were talking about points? What happened to hitting? Points isn't his role in Minn, and wouldn't be his role here. All those other D QB the power play. We already have ADA, Fox, and Trouba ahead of a would be Brodin for PP time. Were Brodin to come here his role would be matching up against the opponent's top line and eating PK minutes. Which ever of ADA, Fox, and Trouba he plays with can score points.

because high point production in my mind can at least compensate for low hits.

A 1LD and 2C are near the top of the Rangers' needs list, but a coach who can instill a fundamental defensive structure that's better than the sum of its parts ? something Jacques Martin has done in the past ? was arguably even more important.

If you need a case example, just look at what Barry Trotz has done for the New York Islanders ? a team who's top pairing is Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock. The value of buy-in into a team system is immeasurable. No amount of offense can compensate IMO.

The penalty-kill is about to see a major improvement, too.

Hope so. That thing was brutal. Even when they went through a decent stretch, they NEVER pressured the puck and let the other team essentially walk all over them, collapsing and missing assignments regularly.

I think this is a good hire.

For a defenseman pucks out of net should compensate for low hits. He was by far and away one of the best players on his team in almost every defensive category.

Brodin is one of the leagues best defensive defensemen by just about any and every measurement or form of evaluation. He’s an outstanding skater. His positioning and ability to read and anticipate the play are fantastic. And he’s top notch in shot denial, forcing shots from low-danger areas, chasing down and winning loose pucks, turning the puck back the other way, and denying zone entry.

He, or perhaps Hampus Lindholm are both excellent candidates to bring in to potentially pair with Trouba.

Uggh with this Brodin stuff. It reeks of the Shattenkirk desires of years ago.

People want to rebuild, but want get rid of a super young offensive D man. Then bring in via trade, a one dimensional "top pair" defender. Meanwhile in the system you already have Hajek, Miller and others on the door step waiting for their chance at that exact role.

Why trade assets for a guy like that? Make your own. Or put DeAngelo on the top pair making Trouba the defensive anchor?

I trade no assets for any type of top 6 D man. Give the frikken spot to Lindgren if you need that. Brodin or anything like him is not a move that makes long term sense for a team stacked with D men on the rise.

This team needs a legit RW (unless that's where they put Kreider) and possibly a 2C if Strome isn't retained. That's what you trade assets and clear cap space for. Not a stay at home D man.

Even hen Shattenkirk took less money to be here he was vastly overpaid. Never ever compare Shattenkirk to anything unless we are talking STDs

Every time I see the word "Shattenkirk", I think: $6.5 million down the fucking drain next season!!! What a waste!

This post is all over the place.

You don't want a one dimensional "top pair" dman (one who can actually match up against the opponent's top line), but you want to put offense only Tony D in that spot?

You don't want to trade for a LHD because of Hajek who hasn't been able to play his way back onto the big club and Miller who has yet to play a pro game, but then you want to trade for a right wing where Buch, Kakko, Gauthier, and Kravtsov are fighting for spots?

Rangers have plenty of scoring punch, especially with ALF coming in. Need to be able to contain the opponent's top players, hence adding a proven shutdown dman.

Shattenkirk and Brodin are two completely different players. Brodin is a minute-crunching, defense-first defender who can move the puck. Shattenkirk is a power play specialist who can't skate backwards.

Yes. But 3 years ago, Shattenkirk was this "must have" meanwhile they had absolutely no need at all for him with McD, Staal, Smith, Holden, Skjei, Pionk, DeAngelo all here. Everyone (you especially) wanted that guy here in the worst way. Thinking just plopping a guy with a certain skill in a major role would just work itself out. That signing pretty much wrecked this team and it's future.

The point isn't a comparison of the style of players. It's this constant need from people to add players when the team has players from within, that could and should take that role. You don't trade for a Dman, when you have so much in the pipeline. They aren't in a win now mode. Doesn't make sense.

You're essentially setting up a roadblock for Lindgren, Miller, Hajek, and any other prospect/young player.

Plus I'm not trading for such a player and letting DeAngelo go. That kid was such a big part of this team's offensive output. His production isn't replaceable on the blue line. I don't ditch that bring in a decent defensive D man, when we already have those types ready to take that role.

It's not all over the place. If you read it, I suggest putting DeAngelo with Trouba making Trouba that defensive presence, which I feel he already is. I don't see putting a stay at home guy with Trouba, significantly opening up Trouba offensive game.

I don't want to trade for a LHD because they have Lindgren if they desire to do this experiment to open up Trouba. Thus sliding Hajek to a more realistic spot, and leaving space for Miller to work his way up within the next year or so.

I want to trade for a RW, because I don't have much confidence in Buch anymore. Kakko still has a lot to prove. Kravstov hasn't played a full season in atop role in ANY league, and may have been a reach of a pick.. Gauthier is Gauthier. Quinn hardly used the big bodied speedster in the playoffs, when such players are usually considered gold. I don't see him rising to a top 6 role. So. They need a legit scorer on the right side. Especially if they are not bringing back Strome to pair with Panarin again. They worked great together and if they go in another direction, they are absolutely going to have to back fill those points. Same with DeAngelo. You have to replace this production somewhere. I love Chytil but I'm not ready to pencil him in for 60+ points yet in any role.

The reason its all over the place is because the young LHD's and the young RW's are all in the same boat, yet you say they don't need to go get a veteran LHD and need a veteran RW.

I never said anything about "opening up Trouba's offensive game". Trouba's first year here was hampered by 2 things. Everyone complained about Ruff and he was paired with Skjei and Smith for the most part. Skeji and Smith are well known for bonehead plays. Brodin is a guy that is always going to be in the right spot and makes very few if any mistakes. That let's Trouba be Trouba. That may be jumping up into the play, or it may be taking a chance to throw a huge hit, but Trouba would know that Brodin is always back there in the right place to cover for him. Lindgren had a good year. He has great chemistry with Fox. There is no need to break that pairing up. Hajek has a long way to go before a top 4 NHL spot is a reality for him. Miller is very talented, but raw. They were happy with his play during the restart, but he is gonna need time before he is capable of delivering you 20+ minutes a night in the NHL. Robertson and Jones are even further away.

You don't have confidence in Buch? He was on pace for 55 points and meshes well with Zib and Kreider. That line may well not make it through the year next season, but where are you finding a RW that is going to outscore Buch for $3.25 million? Kakko has a lot to prove, but Hajek is your second pair LD? Kravtsov and Miller are in the exact same spot, tons of talent needing to round out their game to make it to the next level. It's not really a surprise that Quinn didn't use Gauthier a lot in the playoffs, he's 22 and had a whole 17 NHL games under his belt. That has absolutely nothing to do with his shot at earning a spot on the 3rd line next year.

As the roster currently sits at this exact moment there are three things that need to be worked out. (4 if you count the goalie situation, but it's a foregone conclusion that one of Hank or Geo is gone)

1&2) What are they doing with Strome and ADA

3) Trouba needs a legit partner, for which Brodin is an excellent solution.

If you could build a package around Strome to get Brodin and a use ADA to land a young 2C, then the rebuild is pretty much over. After that all you need to do is circle back around to that thread about beefing up the 4th line and you're all set.
