Seattle Expansion Draft — Who Are the Rangers Protecting?

The draft is at the conclusion of the 20-21 season. It'll be the exact same format as the Vegas draft. Protection slots are the same. Choice of either 7F/3D/1G or 8S/1G.

Here's a link to CapFriendly's simulator. It lists all of those who are eligible for exposure as well as those who are illegible such as Shesterkin, Fox, etc.

The Rangers, given that they don't have a lot of long-term pieces, have a pretty easy expansion draft ahead of them. Things just get a little hairy if they add another defenseman that's eligible for selection.

Which they might do, depenidng on the Hank outcome, as Brooks is hinting at. But, yeah, their current Seattle Expansion "risks" seem really low. They'll probably lose someone like Howden or Hajek — someone of that ilk.

Can't imagine, if they re-sign him, Fast won't ask for trade protection for exactly this purpose.

Right. Adding another defenseman means they probably have to for 8S/1G and risk losing someone like Gauthier, but is that really the end of the world? I'm high on Gauthier but other teams will lose much better players.

No, and we both know it. The same holds true for any number of those most likely get plucked. Losing a Howden, Gauthier, Hajek, etc. isn't going to break the team at all. They'll just backfill and move right on. Same as when they lost Lindberg.

Yep. I could totally see a bunch of one-year NMCs that pop up with new deals.

Any agent worth his salt will be unmoving on it. All pun intended.

"You want my client, protect him. Otherwise, we're going to a team that will."

I don't see Gauthier getting protection over Howden. However, given that the the pickings will be fairly slim among the defensemen and forwards, I think Seattle would probably take Georgiev, insofar as he would probably be tradeable for something somewhat more valuable than a Gauthier or Howden.

One silver lining to the Rangers rather overt top heaviness is that they will not have to expose players as good as the guys many teams will have to expose.

If Georgiev is even on the roster by the time of expansion draft he’s not getting exposed. Shesterkin is ineligible for selection. The Rangers would protect Georgiev in that case.

Right. Berube would be exposed.

Berube has a two way contract that has now expired with the end of the 2019-20 season. I'm not sure if a two way qualifies as an NHL contract for purposes of qualifying for the goalie requirement in the expansion draft, but in any event, Berube would have to be signed not only for 2020-21 but 21-22 in order to satisfy the requirement of exposing a goalie. The Rangers can protect Georgiev and find a marginal goalie, sign him for $700,000 for 21-22, and expose him, but then they are stuck with the NHL one way contract (with cap implications).

Forgot about this. They badly need that LD spot filled. Either it has to wait another year or DeAngelo goes in a deal for one. Waiting another year to start filling that void means we won't be much, if any, better defensively next season.

One- and two-way deals relate only to salary. A one-way deal means a player makes the same amount regardless of if he plays in the NHL or AHL. A two-way deal means his AHL salary is less (often much less). It has nothing to do with waivers or, in this case, expansion exemption.

And also a one-way salary is only charged against the NHL cap if it exceeds the minimum salary, currently $700K, +$375K.

There is no way Lias Andersson is not traded by that time. There is no way they protect Gauthier over Lemieux or Howden.

Doesn't Staal have a NMC? And also, his contract is up next summer, I think he retires after next summer in all honesty.
