Rangers to Add "Muscle and Grit" for Next Season

I mean it seems pretty obvious to me. Pending RFA Josh Anderson who has been linked to several times before. I bet he'll be a Ranger by next February or whenever the hell the next stupid season finally starts.

Sort of. It's a drum Brooks, specifically, has been beating. He hasn't been linked anywhere else. He's also coming off major shoulder surgery. It's gotta be a concern.

The problem is he is a RW we have Kakko, Buch, Gauthier, Fast?, Kravtsov on the RW If we let Fast go and sign Anderson Kravtsov again is stuck in AHL he might flip out and leave for KHL for good. He is probably flipping out that they made him come to the playoffs and chose to play garbage Fogarty over him when Fast was out.

Buch has 1 year left on his contract.

Anderson is a better player than Fast, Kakko (currently) and Gauthier.

'down' year, coming off surgery, will be cheaper in trade and contract. A big, tough Canadian boy is what this team needs more of.

They made Kravtsov come for the playoffs? No. He willingly came. Anyone had the ability to opt-out. There was probably never a chance he was getting into the lineup short of severe injuries to the lineup. The team lost Fast, and Kravtsov isn't ready for the top-six in his first NHL game, so they went with a defensive forward who can play in the bottom-six. Quinn was short two penalty killers with Lemieux and Fast out. Kravtsov hasn't killed a penalty at all in North America.

When you consider the north/south game of JT Miller is exactly the kind of player this team needs, the McDonough trade takes on the smell of day old garbage juice during a heat wave in July.

That's the first time I've ever heard of JT Miller's game described as North/South.

Too bad he couldn't produce more while he was here.

Pointless moaning over JT Miller.

He wasn’t the player he is now with the Rangers. He wasn’t with Tampa either. It took him two moves to get there, and there are absolutely no guarantees he’d develop like that if he stayed.

Water under the bridge.

Right. The same goes for someone like Ryan Graves. Sometimes these moves end up being wake-up calls or players finally find the right coaches to develop them properly. Development isn't consistent.

The Miller trade was only a head scratcher becusse of age and cost since he was young and cheaper. He wasn't the hockey player he is now. I liked him though so I never really wanted him to leave but it is what it is.

He was on an expiring contract when they traded him and they saw the big raise coming too.

The reason that the 4th line twice could not clear the zone was not an absence of grit but an absence of talent.

I've heard the call for more grit after playoff losses before, and the overreactions that have resulted have not been good, like trading a future HOFer in Zubov for gritty Ulf Samuelson in the tail end of his career or the notorious trade of Matias Norstrom and Ray Ferraro to get Mary McSorley.

Maroon and Boyle, yes. Lemieux, no. He's not good at anything. Below replacement level in almost every facet. They should be looking to move him, honestly. He's like an even shittier Ryan Hollweg.

Agreed. He's also, clearly, a leadership staple.

I don't get the Lemieux hate around here. Probably not the smartest player, but he can play. Certainly better than Hollweg. Atleast he can slot up and not be a complete disaster. I think someone needs to make a decision on what kind of player they want him to be. He's a guy that will flourish elsewhere.

Is Troy Brouer still serviceable?

This is why the Lias total failure hurts.

I've said this before, and I don't want to sound even a hair down on Zibanejad or Panarin, but they're both super, super soft hockey players, even so I don't want to judge them much based on the three pseudo playoff games we saw, but I think there's plenty of logic here.

Disagree highly with your take on Panarin and Zib. Zib especially. While they were definitely pretty weak in the playoffs this year, I really don't want to gauge anyone on the shit show that is this post season. They both took a little while to get going during the regular season and it looks like they weren't there yet when the "post season" started.

During the season they both fought through checks and went to the middle of ice while attacking the net. This team didn't really play all too soft during the regular season.

I would love more grit on the team across the board. But the Rangers seem to address grit by adding AHL level enforcers/ AHL level role players (see Digussepppeeee). I don't think a teams grit factor can be defined by its fourth line. So why BOTHER? Stack the 4th line with PK and PP specialists. Get our top forwards off our PK. I don't want Zib or Strome out there killing penalties. They're too valuable to be out there defending shots. Moving forward I want to see Howden, Andersson, Fast if he's brought back and a4th line winger make up the PK units. Quinn isn't going to use a 4th line much anyway. Might as well use the lineup space for special teams.

If you're looking to address grit, you must get a top 6 forward to bring it. Really wish they would have traded up for Tkachuk a couple years ago. Maybe Kakko and Buch step it up next year. It'd be nice if Kreider would play like the freight train he was too.

LOL I am not high on Kravstov at all, but I was thinking that same exact thing. Just a bunch of poor roster decisions with him and Diguesseppeee.

he produced plenty, but whenever he coughed up the puck everybody would be all over him, including the coaches. That is why he couldn't get consistent top line minutes. I think similar thing happened to him in Tampa, the coaches eventually demoted him to 2nd/3rd line.

There's a lot of revisionist history around Miller here.

He was a point per game player for Tampa after the trade.

He didn't discover how to play hockey in Vancouver, he just discovered consistency.

Wrong. Well, it isn't wrong technically, it's tailoring an argument to suit your position.

He put up 18 in 19 to finish the season playing on the Stamkos line. He was bounced from that line, and followed it up with 47 in 75 the following season.

Commonly referred to as "doing a Namestnikov".
