Rangers Locking Up Tony DeAngelo is Far From No-Brainer

Well because he's generally not a good defender? Don't the numbers prove that for the most part? I guess we either trust that Quinn knows what he's doing or he doesn't.

I don't care that he's not a good defender. He's really good offensively and would generate even more offense if he's out there more with the teams offensive stars. Use him as a weapon, not as a 3rd option for output at even strength on a third pair. Drive the play for once, instead of being reactionary.

I agree the cap argument is a relevant one. And he's clearly benefitted from O-zone starts and assignments.

But when I watch this guy play it's clear he's pretty special as an offensive d-man.

- He's a total zone exit machine

- He's a crisp and creative passer of the puck

- He's got an excellent wrist shot and release on him

- He's incredibly effective off the rush

- He's such a smooth and efficient skater

- Watching him walk the blueline is pure sex

I could go on. The thread title is spot on though. This isn't a no-brainer. But I really don't "want" to let him go. That being said, the return in a potential trade could easily change my mind.

Right, I don't want to let him go either. Ideal scenario, he signs for like $4.5x4. Gets him paid and gives him a chance to be a UFA before age 30 so he can cash in (somewhere else), while at the same time leaving room to add that first pair LHD that's currently missing.

They do use him as a weapon, by giving him heavy OZ starts with the top 6...

Who's to say that putting DeAngelo out there against top lines, doesn't give HIM an advantage? Having him out there MORE with the top six, may result in more time spent in the offensive zone. Add in that the top six is probably more defensively sound than the bottom six and I see little reason to be frightened to put DeAngelo out there more.

Why is it always the Rangers are thinking they are outclassed by other teams top lines? That's not really the case anymore. Stack that offense and dominate.

Umm, DeAngelo is the one that said playing against the opponents top line doesn't give him the advantage. His offensive instincts, while flashy and productive, also result in a lot of turnovers. He ranks 12th in the league with 2.97 giveaways per 60 minutes. That would get amplified the more he's trotted out in the DZ with the other team's top line on the ice. That equals more goals against.

For further evidence out of 156 Dmen to play 50+ games, ADA ranks 116th in takeaways per 60 and 146th in blocked shots per 60. So when he does find himself in the DZ, he's neither getting in shooting lanes nor striping people of the puck. Trouba and Fox are 21st and 2nd in takeaways per 60 and 31st and 59th in blocks per 60.

DeAngelo said that???? He doesn't seem to be the type to say anything about his deficiencies..

I don't care about his blocked shots or take aways. I care about the amount of offense that he generates. I think more and more time with the top six forwards, starting in any zone will be a give and take effect. He doesn't have to be any good defensively when he's out there more with the teams better defensive forwards. I think they can make up for his faults. I mean, Skjei stunk all over the ice and added no offensive support. Adding a guy in his spot with the capability to CARRY the offense is already an improvement. You're adding an almost elite offensive talent to a spot that was offering no real redeeming quality.

If you want to say Trouba fits better with Lindgren. Fine. I can see that. Nobody is saying that.

I don't see the Rangers having the assets to land an inexpensive 1st pairing LD. Is there one available in free agency this summer?

Do we even want to do that, with all the kids in the pipeline? Didn't they make that unnecessary move already when they signed Shattenkirk two years ago? Gorton was really high on Hajek. They talked up Rykov. What happens when they are ready. Their chance should come this coming season.. We going to another D man to this equation?

He didn't literally say it. His play in his own zone speaks for itself.

Again, as you've seemed to breeze over this every-time you reply. He already gets plenty of time with the best forwards. Where do you think all his points are coming from? He not out there with the 4th line all the time.

They don't need an inexpensive 1st pairing LD. As long as they don't commit too much money to ADA they'll have plenty of cap space to add a 1st pairing LD at market value. They mistake they already made with Shattenkirk was giving too much money to an offense only pp specialist that can't defend.

Funny says back there that DeAngelo said "playing against the opponents top line doesn't give him the advantage."

Once again. I DO NOT CARE WHAT ZONE HE STARTS IN. If hes on the top pairing, hes more than likely to be out there on the offensive zone start. Even if it's in the defensive zone. They can cover for him. I'd imagine he could also generate some nifty break outs from the defensive zone. The kid is just coming into his own and may mature more on the ice. If not, he wouldn't be much different than any other offensive D man. They mostly stink in their own end, YET get big minutes.

Market value for a 1st pairing D man, is exactly what I think will hurt them. That's going to be expensive and they have a large pool of potential that they need to start injecting into the roster over the next 3 years.

But I'm intrigued to know who you would like to see put in that spot via free agency, at the cost of keeping DeAngelo.

Or, we can accept him for what he is and not hope for him to be something different and act accordingly.

Honestly think that’s what they’re doing. I think they realize his positives, big as they are, really only lay on the offensive side.

Also believe that they do not feel too strongly about his game growing much defensively.
