Let's Talk About Phil Di Giuseppe

He looks pretty good. Not a fancy skill set, but some speed and spunk. A significant improvement over the likes of BS and Haley. He's 26 and is not going to develop into something he is not, but we could use a passable 4th line that draws some penalties and scores the odd goal. For what it matters, he's been having the best offensive year of his career with the 'pack. With this guy playing passable hockey and and Lindgren playing on the kill, can we finally bring the BS era to an end?

Pretty good evaluation of him, Sod.

His defensive awareness is what sticks out with me. I like his keeping it simple; responsibility seems to be his main priority. Possibly a younger, slightly more offensive version of Jesper Fast, which if Jesper Fast is moved, he would most likely be a decent replacement.

But I'll hold off on that until I see him play some much better teams. Like I said in the other thread, he's here for a short amount of time and has played against some bad teams (Red Wings twice , LA, and Buffalo). Not to mention Toronto did NOT have a good game against us last week. They looked awful!

He’s getting his opportunity now. If he plays well, no reason to believe he can’t stick around or at least be in the mix.

As for ending the BS era, the contract is the issue.

Please God, no more buyouts

Saw DiGi in Hartford weeks ago and was impressed with his speed and determination to be in the mix, in the play. Not surprised at all that he's getting a taste of B'way. Agree that Smith should go to Ned the Tailor in midtown and buy an armful of suits so he looks good not wearing Rangers Blue on 34th Street. Get Hank a few while your'e there.

With respect to the cap, the impact of the three options with BS are pretty similar. If you keep him on the roster, he costs $4 m. If you bury him in Hartford or buy him out, his cap hit plus the cap hit of the grinder who replaces him will also be about $4 m (at least in the second year with respect to the buy out). Buy out isn't really better or worse than the other options.

So far he's a pleasant surprise. Definitely a nice role player to throw out there and play more minutes than the guys that had the spot prior. More guys like this for the 4th line could take the stress off top line players for the PK and just to take some minutes. It's a long season. Need a 4th line that can play or at least skate...
