Pelosi releases 'fact sheet' on Trump impeachment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) office on Monday released a "fact sheet" detailing allegations against President Trump amid House Democrats' ongoing impeachment inquiry.

“President Trump has betrayed his oath of office, betrayed our national security and betrayed the integrity of our elections for his own personal political gain,” the document argues.

It goes on to list what Pelosi's office calls proof of a "pressure campaign" and "cover up" by Trump related to Ukraine. The sheet includes quotes from Trump and the anonymous whistleblower who filed a complaint regarding Trump's July 25 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he pressed for an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and Biden's son, Hunter.

You have to wonder who Republicans are talking about behind closed doors as their party’s candidate for 2020 if/when the train does go off the rails. Pence? Will they rally around him?

Maybe, if he's not snared by impeachment, too. My early guess would be Nikki Haley, though.

Support for impeaching, removing Trump at all-time high in CNN poll

Support for impeaching and removing President Trump from office has reached an all-time high in a new CNN poll, with more respondents now supporting both steps than opposing them.

Fifty percent said they want Trump to be impeached and removed from office, compared to 43 percent who said they did not feel that way. Seven percent had no opinion.

Almost half — 49 percent — also said Trump wrongly used his position in the White House to try and gain dirt on a political rival.

Respondents’ stances are largely divided by party, with 87 percent of Democrats supporting impeachment and removal compared to 50 percent of independents and just 6 percent of Republicans. Both sides appear to be entrenched in their views, with most respondents saying they feel strongly about their opinions.

In September, the same poll found that 47 percent of respondents said they were in favor of impeaching the president and removing him from office, while 45 percent opposed the measures. By comparison, 41 percent of respondents supported impeachment and removal in May while 54 percent opposed it.

In the September poll, about three-quarters of Democrats supported impeachment and removal, as did 46 percent among independents and just 14 percent of Republicans.

Despite the uptick in those pushing for his removal in the new poll, Trump’s approval ratings haven’t seen a significant downswing, CNN noted. His approval rating stands at 41 percent in the latest poll, while his disapproval rating sits at 57 percent — results similar to findings in September and August.

A successful Trump impeachment would make that decision exceptionally interesting. They could double down on their strategy and put up someone close to the Trump presidency - maybe Lindsay Graham? They could try to steer back to the mean and put up a Romney, or do something completely different.

I'd wonder if "is next to R on ticket" is enough to hang onto the Southern Bloc of voters that deliver the Bible Belt and they could steer into the social quasi-progressive/fiscal conservative space. That calculus would be quite meaningful if the RNC has full control over the nominee.

Trump has lost the battle to discredit impeachment

First, the public has only a narrow window into the testimony of the cooperating witnesses who have come forward and has seen only a few documents substantiating evidence of Trump’s wrongdoing. To the extent that there is blockbuster evidence still not out in the public domain, support for impeachment may strengthen even further.

Second, the initiation of impeachment in and of itself helped shift public opinion by giving heft and legitimacy to the investigation. A succinct restatement of facts in articles of impeachment, including quotes from the July 25 call transcript, may move opinion once again.

Third, it is essential to keep the impeachment focused on the issue that jump-started the formal inquiry — Ukraine — and to remind voters that what is at stake here is different from what has come before, worse than the corruption we have come to expect from this administration. Trump cannot be left in office to manipulate and invalidate the election in which he is running by inviting foreign interference. We have never had a president ask a foreign government to interfere in an election on his behalf, and use taxpayer-funded aid to extort an ally into this breach of American sovereignty.

Whether Trump is removed, he will almost certainly be impeached, and it will be critical to those fighting to preserve the sanctity of U.S. elections to make clear that what is at stake is none other than the basic principle that Americans choose American leaders.

American diplomat in Ukraine gave “damning” testimony about President Trump

William B. Taylor Jr., the top diplomat in Ukraine, gave “damning” testimony Tuesday about President Trump and the effort to pressure Ukraine’s government for political gain, according to a Democratic lawmaker and another person familiar with the opening statement Mr. Taylor delivered behind closed doors in the ongoing impeachment inquiry.

“What he said was incredibly damning to the president of the United States,” Representative Ted Lieu, Democrat of California, said after emerging after hours of questioning Tuesday morning. He declined to elaborate further, citing House rules against releasing such testimony.
In an extensive opening statement, Mr. Taylor laid out a detailed timeline of events during his time in the administration, according to the person familiar with his testimony. The person also described the information Mr. Taylor provided to lawmakers as damning.

Mr. Taylor’s testimony was based in part on detailed notes that he took throughout his tenure, according to another person familiar with what he has told lawmakers. Mr. Taylor has shared his notes with the State Department but has not produced copies of them for lawmakers conducting the impeachment inquiry, the person said.

I'll concede that, in context, the word is used appropriately. While factually inaccurate (this isn't mob violence without legal authority and Trump is most definitely still alive), it's grammatically correct.

There are just so many other words that he could have used - not the one that, in the USA, is most definitely a racially charged term.

So does anyone know what the next steps are? Is there anything actionable?

Seems like the inquiry part of the process is still gathering testimony - that's an ongoing actionable.

I heard last night on one of the newscasts that the Judiciary Committee is soliciting feedback from all of the other inquiring panels and asking those Chairs to send over what they have learned...from that I think, Articles of Impeachment will be written by the JC with final decision on 'how many' reserved to Pelosi.

Hearings and testimony will continue into Saturdays to advance the timetable - another actionable.

The reported thinking is that the "Articles" will be ready by Thanksgiving so a trial in the senate can occur in December. Paraphrasing Mitch McConnel, I believe he said that the trial will 'wrap up quickly' in December.

I actually don't have a problem with the word being used. It's a word.

I just find it shocking that Trump is all of a sudden anti-lynching.

Not to say the obvious, but I have a theory that ones stance on lynching and other acts of uncontrolled violence may change based on whether you're a participant or a target.
