Love the tag line "uses face as a punching bag". De'Angelos one punch fight with Okposo was right up there with Lem vs. Wood.

Oh Hell yeah, but the guy has a few rings to go with it. He was the target of many an "Ozz-jeer" back in the day!

Yeah Lefty, I was surprised that NYR were 2nd in the league as well. It's too bad our biggest guys are afraid of breaking a nail. Panarin actually trains in MMA. I hope he doesn't try to test it out though.

It's just that as the team sits now, the two guys that would be willing to drop the gloves are ADA at 5'11", 180lbs and Lemieux, who's barely out of his rookie shorts.

Well they got rid of their top 2 fighters, McLeod and Pionk. (Smith 3rd)

But they locked up Buch, who has 4 fights in the last 2 seasons.

Iirc Pionk had the most awkward fights that just had his head in the other guys stomach and skated in a circle with his arms flapping. I still have a hard time understanding what I watched.

Yeah, it's at an all time low in todays game but I personally think it will never cease altogether. If it was ever to be removed, it would have a negative effect on the game itself. And what would be next, no checking? Hopefully it's a tradition that carries on.

Well, no traditions are safe in the current year, so while I hope you're right, it's really only a matter of time until it's gone

Fighting will never go away entirely because cheap shots are never going to go away. But yea, enforcers are dead.

Iirc the two teams who played for the Stanley Cup had a grand total of 0 fighting majors in the playoffs.
The role of fighting is certainly diminished. I'm not entirely sure removing it altogether would have much effect on the game at all.

Days of the goons are dead. Now, you need enforcers that can also play and pitch in a goal here and there.

It would have zero effect on the game itself but I don't know anybody who doesn't get excited when 2 guys square off. Fans love it when a guy sticks up for their teammates or just simply giving some life to an otherwise lackluster game with no emotion.

Doesn't a big hit do the same thing?

Definitely, a big hit can wake up the game. But it's got to be a biggie.

For sure, but they're even rarer. The kind of hit you're talking about — like Campbell on Umberger — occurs like once a season.
