The Salary-Cap Hell the Rangers are Still Trying to Navigate

I mean, I'm probably fine with that. Because this "same team," is also going to be one year deeper on Kakko and Kravtsov, and you can probably add someone like Miller to next year's roster, further improving the offensive potency of the team.

I think part of the issue here is that we all viewed adding Panarin, Kakko, and Trouba as the "turning point".

That's probably true when you look back at it two years from now. As of right now, our first line will have at least one wing who has never scored better than a third line rate, our second line will likely include a pair of players who can't legally drink, our third line will be the same. Our defense will be half players who have never played real NHL minutes.

We're going to be young. We're going to be fun to watch. We're going to enjoy this season for very different reasons than we enjoyed seasons past, but this team is overwhelmingly more likely to finish outside the playoff picture than inside it. Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil, Andersson, Hajek, Fox, Howden, heck, even Kreider, Trouba and Panarin, could all struggle with adjustments to new roles, new ice sizes, new challenges, new leagues, bigger asks from the coaching staff, higher expectations, and more. I'd reckon it won't all go perfectly, and at the end of the day, that's what you might need. We're not going to want to swing hard in FA next year (nor should we as it's a garbage market). We will, however, want to budget out the raises that we'll need come 2022, and possibly hand out another heavy-bonus contract to a key cog for our future.

But those are two different issues (competitiveness vs. cap problems). For better or worse the rebuild is essentially over. The roster works financially. Time for all the kids to play. If all the kids suck then the cap constraints don't matter.

You figure, everyone is a year older. Get returned from Strome and Kreider from deadline trades. Call up 1 from AHL, bring over a recent draft pick for another 1.

If none of Chytil, Kravtsov, Kakko, Howden, Andersson, etc become a top 6 forward, then it doesnt matter anyway. But at this point in a rebuild, you cant run your team by "What is Player X doesnt turn out to be Position Y??"

^this guy gets it.

I mean that's fine, but if they go into the playoffs and only have one scoring line, I don't think leadership is going to view it that way. They're going to want to be players. But regardless, they aren't going to have a choice, and that's never a good position to be in, especially when you have those young guys on ELCs.

K'andre? It's pretty wishful thinking to expect a rookie D to come in and make that kind of difference.

What kind of difference does K'andre need to make as a rookie? This is the D in 2020. One rookie on the third pair isn't terrible.

Skjei - Trouba

Hajek - Fox

Rykov/Reunanen/Miller- ADA

If they make the playoffs next year leadership will be ecstatic because it shows the plan (even though you think they don't have one) has worked. If they make the playoffs with a bunch of 19-21 year olds they're on the right path.

You are saying “I’d give up Kravtsov and Trouba just for the cap space”.

Yes.....

If this were an alternate dimension, where Andersson was as good as Kravstov and if Trouba was a shitty often injured PP specialist like Shattenkirk.

Then yes. Yes THAT is what I'm saying. Totally.

Kravtsov is unproven, and Trouba is an often injured expensive dman.

Two weeks from the signing and shit is on fire because they haven't made any kneejerk reactionary decisions. The Rangers fan base folks

Shit is not on fire. Larry brooks wrote an article that people are reacting to here. I obviously wasn’t for the signing for the reasons we are just starting to see. But it happened and moves are going to have to come to get cap compliant. Our opinions won’t change because we knew the consequences. Others might who didn’t understand in the first place that it was never free. Regardless who is right or not may never be known but it’s sure as shot not going to be known now.

Your posts in this thread were in line with Brooks' "woe is me" tone. He pushed the overexaggeration button for clicks and out came the fans who are just waiting for it. This will be resolved in 2-3 weeks and nobody will remember Brooks' nonsense here, just like when he went insane with the cost for Trouba being Buchnevich, Lundkvist, and a 1st.

I actually think my posts are pretty reserved. Woe is me? I’m not the one making the plan argument. If the fans are overreacting it’s not about this. It’s the hype about next season. The kids can really only disappoint at this point. Their age and experience is a footnote to a lot of people. While it’s possible one or two of the kids will perform up to expectations, 8-10 on the same team will not. There is going to be growing pains. who’s the next lias Anderson next summer? Career on life support according to the fan base before he’s able to buy a beer. The impact of panarin was and never will be only about him. Everybody should expect him to perform. What is the effect on the rest of the roster paying a wing 12m. I could argue it’s worse than paying your goalie 8m 5 years ago. Lastly the feeling that panarin takes pressure off the kids is backwards. His signing has elevated expectations for the team. Kakko and Kravtsov are right now projected in the top 6. If they need time to adjust which they probably will, how long until the fans gets impatient?

In the end this isn’t decided in 2-3 weeks. It’s all about 2-3 years from now like it’s always has been. Hopefully the bet they made this summer pays off then. More than anything it just needs not to go bust.

You said the cap squeeze isn't going to stop lol. Check capfriendly and look at the money coming off in the next 2 years, then take a deep breath and rest easy knowing Gorton's got this.

It’s not. That’s a problem shared by a lot of teams. That’s not being woe is me that is being aware of reality. The contracts coming off the books is way overblown. Hanks 8m comes off the books but do you really think the rangers aren’t paying 4-5m for his replacement? Zibanejad is on a ridiculous contract and will need a massive raise in 3 years. The 8-10 elc guys now will all need raises. It’s all manageable but the rangers are going to be squeezed nonetheless. The rangers are betting on panarin being their lead guy who can playing the leading part for a cup team. I don’t see him as that. That is my opinion. How long until this board is lighting up with the need for a guy to play with panarin? We’ll see. Problem is even if that comes true the rangers will find it hard to make trades when squeezed by the cap

Funny the rangers have a projected 8-10 guys playing on elcs this year and are having cap problems. Yet it?s hard to understand the looming cap problems when all of those elcs need new contracts?
Well for possibly the 100th time... The contracts that are the issue go away when those ELCs expire.
