"VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- With labor talks having already begun on an informal basis, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and union chief Don Fehr are in favor of rebooting the World Cup of Hockey tournament and holding it every four years.

...

"We think the World Cup of Hockey can be a wonderful event, particularly if we don't go to the Olympics,'' Bettman said.

------------

My opinion: terribly out-of-touch statement by Bettman. Players are mad that they can't play in the Olympics. Maybe the players get behind the World Cup, but they would much rather play in the Olympics

If they're going to do a world cup it should be an actual World Cup.

I.e. proper national teams, not the completely laughable version with fabricated teams such as Team Europe. It's shit.

I agree needs to be Olympic type tournament.

Then just go to the Olympics. An actual World Cup, like you're talking about, would be the same thing.

Except you're not required to deal with the Olympic Committee and the timing of the Olympic Games.

But yes, the no brainer here appears to be stop fucking around and find a way to participate in the Olympics.

so world cup and world championships like we just had would be different?

You never get all the best players going to the IIHF World Championships though. Whether it's guys still playing in the playoffs, guys not wanting to play right after a long grueling season, or guys just not caring about this tournament. Its never best on best the way the Olympics and World Cup is/was. (Obviously the 2016 World Cup was an oddball with the Europe and North American teams)

Yeah, two worries for the NHL home office:

1. timing of the Olympic Games, disruption of regular season

2. control of competition ceded to Olympic Committee

By creating the artificial World Cup of Hockey NHL controls the timing and the competition. Athletes lose in not being part of the Olympic experience (athletes from all the Olympic sports) and winning an Olympic medal for their home country.

And the NHL doesn't get rights to use any Olympic footage for marketing, so it doesn't really help grow the game.

3. (But really 1.) The Olympic committees get all that fat advertising money while the NHL takes the financial hit with an interrupted season. If the IOC, USOC, etc. were willing to share the wealth more, problem would be solved.

I think its so sad that we never get to see a real international tournament in hockey with all the best players in the world.

Like Football World Cup. Its the biggest thing for every player, fan and coach in the world. Playing for your national team should really mean something, not just something you have to do if your team sucks and you exit the playoffs early.

Like seriously, how hard is it to fit in 3-4 weeks every 4th year so you can have a real world cup?

3-4 weeks is unrealistic. A "real" World Cup would have all kinds of qualifiers, training, etc. 3-4 weeks is just the actual tournament. If you get rid of all the other stuff you have....the 2016 World Cup.

And I think players would be far less interested in it during the summer than they would in the winter. Do we really think that Auston Matthews wants to play some throwaway game up in Rochester in the middle of July?

The World Cup got it right. Fans wanting more teams is understandable, but the larger scale ends up giving you the same issues that the Olympics does, from a logistics standpoint. Puck Head has it, the only reason the NHL doesn't go is that they don't get the money they want out of it.

which is a shame cause the players are not doing for money. Players are willing to play for free just to be able to play for their country and be part of the Olympics experience but Bettman wants his piece of action. A real shame

Depends on your perspective.

No one in Europe, players or fans alike, gives two fucks about a “team Europe”. It means nothing.
