Really? A defensive defenseman in the 2nd?

They should have taken another goaltender.

I’m alright with this pick. Not every defenseman you have has to be offensive

The Rangers selected seven players on Saturday. The Blueshirts made two selections in the second round - defenseman Matthew Robertson with the 49th overall pick and forward Karl Henriksson with the 58th overall pick.

Robertson, 18, skated in 52 games with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, registering seven goals and 26 assists for 33 points, along with a plus-18 rating and 26 penalty minutes. He established WHL career-highs in several categories in 2018-19, including assists, points, and plus/minus rating, and he tied his WHL career-high in goals. Robertson ranked second among Edmonton defensemen in points during the past season. He also served as an alternate captain for the Oil Kings in 2018-19. Robertson helped Edmonton advance to the 2019 WHL Playoffs, and he tallied eight points (four goals, four assists) in 16 games.

The 6-3, 200-pounder has skated in 126 career WHL games over parts of three seasons (2016-17 - 2018-19), all with Edmonton, registering 14 goals and 44 assists for 58 points, along with a plus-two rating and 72 penalty minutes. Internationally, the Edmonton, Alberta native has represented Canada in several tournaments. Robertson helped Canada win a gold medal at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, as he registered four points (two goals, two assists) in five games. He tallied six points (two goals, four assists) in five games with Canada-Black at the 2017 World U17 Hockey Challenge, and he was named to the Tournament All-Star Team, as he led all defensemen in the tournament in points. In addition, Robertson recorded two assists and posted a plus-five rating in five games while representing Canada at the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship.

Entering the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Robertson was ranked No. 26 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters eligible for this year's Draft.

Excerpt from the 2019 Black Book

Watching Robertson, he immediately stands out for his excellent skating ability at his size with speed and agility that allow him to play a very confident game. Robertson clearly trusts his tools, often times attempted moves at the blueline and sometimes even in the d zone. In our viewings lacked touch on both his passes and stickhandling, often bobbling the puck and whiffing on passes. Offensively he had games where he was engaged, making cuts into the slot, demanding the puck at the point, and finding lanes; as well as games where he sat back content to not make a huge impact in this area. Defensively he was a rock, with an excellent stick and gap on the rush, and strong in the corners with great board work. Decision making with the puck was not always good, with a lot of turnovers on bad reads and forced plays. The skating and length combination is enticing but Robertson needs to fine tune his decision making and refine his skills.

I'm pretty pleased with Robertson for a 49th pick. As Josh said, he was a legit late 1st rounder for a bunch of the final ratings including McKenzie (25), Button (31), ISS (19), Future Considerations (19), McKeen's (29), and Hockey News (31). So we would all have been disappointed if we still had the 20th pick and had taken him with it, but it wouldn't have been impossible that he was a pick at that level. I can definitely see him playing well along side Fox, Lundquist, DeAngelo, or even Zach Jones. Strong on D is boring, but I could use a lot more boring after last season. Yet not an offensive zero. Does sound like Skjei, only with maybe better D chops.

I was hoping for a big Defensive Dman to slip to us at 20. But it seems like we still got him at 49. From what I've read, I'm thrilled with how we did in this draft.

Robertson has a better head than Skjei, but not quite as athletic.

I wonder if, had the Rangers not traded up for Miller last year, they would have for him this year. Gorton said they had him a lot higher, and that aligns with a lot of the rankings. Plus, they are similar type players. I like this pick more and more.

Can you elaborate on that? I can see his points total is worse than last year and that he is a -11 (+18 last season), but could there be any reason for that? Injury? Shitty team? Or is he just playing worse than last season?

Anyway, he was a mid-2nd round pick and we have a lot of D prospects, so its not the end of the world if he dont become an NHL’er.

He's -12 on the best team in the WHL.
