Based on what you can get back, and the kinds of players you want around based on how they performed last year... The order of exits should be:

Kreider (obvious reasons, expensive and has massive value)

Shattenkirk (more value than Smith)

Names (Versatile forward)

Smith (buriable)

Buch (pretty much a wild card with what you'll get)

ADA (we've got too many of the same kind of RHD)

Strome

There are moves out there to clear cap.

Apparently Kreider's value isn't that massive if he wasn't even worth #16 in the draft..or apparently any pick in the 1st round from those interested. Something tells me he signs a reasonable contract, and I'd rather deal with a buyout penalty than lose Kreider for less than he is worth.

We dont know if he was offered.

Think Gorton would risk going into the season without Kreider or Panarin?

Listen I?m not trying to relitegate the Tampa trade. My point is we traded our captain and another good player and one of the main pieces coming back,Namestnikov, is basically being thrown out as trash if need be by some here. I didn?t like him coming back as an asset and he mY very well be moved for very little.

As far as your options to get under the cap I?d prefer trading for space rather than buyouts. My only reason is my concern about the cap three years from today. It?s going to be tight and adding dead cap space isn?t going to help. My view of this team has not changed. Their window really starts two or three years from now. I?m a big believer that these kids need to grow some before thinking they are ready to be consistent cogs on a contending team. Of course they were always going to be on the roster before panarin. After panarin the cap situation means they are there no matter what because they need their elcs. That?s fine. The roll out of lines looks inpressice outside of center ice. But to me anyway it looks impressive in a couple of years. After all there is a lot of kids here. So in the end I?m not buying into the playoff thing for next year. Not being negative just not seeing it or thinking it?s fair to expect so much from the kids. They have great futures and that time will come.

I'd say the main pieces coming back in the Tampa trade were:

1- 1st round pick

2- Hajek (who has a fantastic shot to make the big club as a 21/22 year old)

3- Conditional 1st round pick

4- Howden

5- Namestnikov

Regardless, it was a year and a half ago. Time to move on. It makes no difference to the Rangers what Tampa trades Miller for.

larry's article today makes a case for why we should keep chris. Has some valid points, one being that Quinn wants to avoid a Zucc situation going into the season where Chris isn't taken care of and it becomes a daily theme.

Much as i hate to say it but if you want to move smith or shatty you well might have to include ADA in the mix as he's an RFA, sorta a blank canvas so to speak. Or include him in a Names move. Moving one of those contracts may well let you lock up Trouba and have a subsequent discussion with the Kreider camp as to what he's after which is probably Hayes/Lee money anyway.

We currently have 8,019,391 in projected cap space

Lets say Trouba gets 7

Trading Namestnikov gets you 4 regardless of the return.

Sending Beleskey down saves you 800k

Buying out Smith gets you $3,379,167. essentially we would acquire $970,833 in dead cap space

That gives you over 9 Mil to increase Krieder by about 2-2.5 and resign Buch with space left over for other moves

The following year the dead cap space from Gerardi goes down by 2.5 mil

The year after that Hank, and Shatty come off the books

That gives us over 17 to play with for resigning whichever kids we decide to resign and that assume the same cap which is unlikely, it will probably go up

I think with a little creativity, we can retain Krieder even with the Panarin contract and still be ok to resign our young kids in the future

Larry Brooks' piece today basically a call for the Rangers to keep Kreider. I'm sure the piece was aimed at JD, who goes back with Brooks over 40 years.

I'd rather sign Kreider and get rid of Buchenivich and do a buyout or whatever of a bad contract.

Kreider?s contract extension would kick in next year. We have 8 mil. in cap according to Capfriendly. Assuming that 8 mil, goes to Trouba, we will need to sign Buchnevich( last seasons salary 925k), Lemieux ( last seasons salary 1.039 mil.) & ADA (last seasons salary 1.263 mil.). If they were given 30% raises over last years salary then we would need 4.2 mil. to cover their salaries. Namestnikovs salary of 4 mil. coupled with the 400k of cap space we gain from sending Beleskey down to the AHL. Would get us that cap. But would leave us up against it. That would be with a 23 man roster? If Smith is sent to the AHL, we shave 1 mil. Off the cap?-if McKegg is sent down his 750k salary goes off the cap.

Pretty much agree, particularly with the bottom of the list.

Panarin is going to make somebody a 30+ goal scorer and it could well be Buch. We now have the elite playmaker, for whom we need finishers or at least some with the raw material as Buch proved last season. If only for the uncertainty of how Kakko and Kravtsov come out of the gate, Buch's usefulness on the right goes up in the short term.

We need at least another half season to assess whether ADA is the real thing offensively and whether he can/will mature or ultimately blow up his own career. I look forward to seeing him compete with Fox for stature. His exchange rate could very well go up.

Strome has proven a versatile - and relatively cheap - piece that can help maintain flexibility and fill holes while Quinn is working out the issues of who does best where and with whom. Center or wing, secondary scorer (puts up umbrella for SH% caveats) or competent grinder. Also, deserves a chance to show if his career makeover is for real. Again, trade value could rise. If not, wasn't that much to start.

If your numbers are right I completely agree. I think getting it right on which kids to extend is big. The Smith deal, Shattenkirk...these things can't repeat themselves. Even Skjei may have been a reach. I'll admit I liked them all at the time.

Is defense becoming harder to project success with? It seems to be our issue.

I've felt all along that signing Panarin and moving Kreider makes little sense unless you're getting a #2 center back. I don't see that trade materializing so I'd imagine Kreider coming back.

If we buy out Smith instead of sending him down we save a lot more, and we only get 970k in dead cap space

For one season. Then you're paying the equivalent in cap penalty in the second year of his buyout.

Year one: $970,8333

Year two: $3,145,833

Year three: $1,145,833

Year four: $1,145,833

That's not really a big deal though. Once they get the roster set, no one will be on a one year deal. Should be good continuity and chemistry building the next two years as there shouldn't be much turnover. Smith's year 2 buyout would be offset by Giradi's buyout dropping in price.

Kreider’s 4.625 mil. is locked into this years cap already—whatever extension gets kicks in next year. The rumor is Trouba at 8 mil, which takes up the 8 mil, we have in cap. So what we need is cap for ADA, Buchnevich & Lemieux.

Let's say those 3 are at $7m (which is probably a bit high)...Namestnikov and Strome are $7.1 alone, and that's before you fiddle with Beleskey and Smith. The issue you'd run into is bonuses for the ELC guys pushing into next yera, but it just requires dumping depth pieces to make it work this year.

Ada and Lemieux need contracts too
