Uncle Larry today says that if it is a choice between at Panarin at 11.5 per for seven years and Kreider at 6.5 for 6, he'd take the latter. I agree. He also points out that there will be other big name UFAs next year and it might be better to wait to see our needs. Agreed again. Last year it was Tavares, this year Panarin, next year someone else.

Pretty sure Hall is the one big name UFA next summer, if he's even available. Tavares and Panarin caliber FAs have generally been pretty rare, but who knows...maybe it is becoming a new norm for guys to turn down extensions for free agency.

You'd rather pay half the price for half the player? I'm not sure I understand the logic.

Yes. It’s rare.

Even if it becomes the norm for 1 big name to go to free agency, that’s 1 free agent. Chances to land that caliber FA is low.

But more importantly, no other shit contracts! Don’t overpay second liners to think they can be first liners because they are free agents. Too many good kids that need ice time.

It's almost like there's a way to look this up...

Taylor Hall is the only one even in the conversation next year. Otherwise, it's Mike Hoffman, Brayden Schenn, and a bunch of bleh.

I really don't like the idea of paying Kreider 6.5 million for 6 more years. I realize there's no other way to sign him without giving him a long term deal, but...

His compete level is about as consistent as the weather pattern around here these days.

I'm most likely in the minority with this, but I can't see spending that kinda money on a guy that's 28 years old and for that long. Kreider is a speed player to me, and players seem to gradually lose their speed as they get older in my opinion. If CK doesn't have his speed, then what does he bring to the table at age 33/34.

I just say fuck it, and trade him at the deadline. This team needs less dead weight, and I think I've seen enough 50% Kreider games to last me a lifetime.

Kakko's going to be here for the next 15 years in my estimation. The Rangers don't have to rush anything. Their system is LOADED with good prospects, that are going to need room on a roster to flourish when/if they get a chance to play. Not to mention next year's draft which may even shape up to be better than this one. I'm not getting too attached to Kreider because I think he'll be better as trade fodder.

I seriously think we'll be better without him after the trade deadline....we should definitely get something good in return for him either as a player/prospect or at next year's draft. I just think this is going to be one of those "We should've never gave him 6 years" kinda deal.

Trouba and Subban were both just traded for nothing. More qualityguys are going to be moved this off season under the same circumstances. The cap is pushing teams to trade players they wouldn’t move otherwise. Nobody here knows who the cap casualties will be in the next couple of years. The rangers should not be rushing themselves into these waters. Three years from now the rangers will have their own rfa crisis. Signing panarin for $12m will not cost nothing but money. It will cost the rangers three years from now albeit in draft picks like Toronto with Marleau or with having to lose a player or two they can no longer afford. It is so damn shortsighted to go all in on panarin right now. With Kakko entering the fold with Kravtsov the rangers already have two wings that project into big time players who will need big time money three years from now. Are you really building this around three wings?

Their best future RFA put up 20 points. I dont think they're in any crisis.

No middle 6 shit contracts and they're fine. Avoid the Danger Zone. Marner, Tavares, Nylander contracts are not the problem in Toronto.

The contracts that will get the Rangers in trouble are the Skjeis (if he plays the same hockey), Buchnevich/ADA long extensions for 1 season of inconsistent play, or Pavelski (Marleau) or the Duchenes and Nyquivst's who have proven time and time again they arent anything special.

I'm starting to see that picture as well, Franny. Kakko, when his ELC contract is up is going to be very expensive. I'm thinking (hoping) Kravtsov and Fox are going to be as well. We're going to need all the room we can muster in order to keep the nucleus of this youthful team in tact. There are so many good prospects that the Rangers have in their system right now, that I just can't see them hanging on to players like Kreider for six more years and paying him 6.5 million.

We see now how Shatty's deal is wearing on them, not to mention Staal's and Hank's. Most of their shit is done in 2 years anyway, so that clears up an ass load of cap space.

I think it's the fact I have never in my 48 years of being a Rangers fan, saw the Rangers actually build their team in this manner...or "rebuild" at all. I have to get used to the fact of having the patience to watch these kids come along, and grow. The whole fucking "WIN NOW!" bullshit is for a time long since vanished.

The way they're putting this together is to hopefully build a powerful, perennial contending franchise for many years to come. The whole "win at all costs now, because it's NY, and we have no patience" bullshit theory isn't working either. I can wait, and I can see now where we're going, and what's more is I like what this team is doing. They FINALLY have what I believe are the right people in place (JD and Gorton). Their hirings are making lots of sense to me, and their strategy looks to be in place to rebuild this with patience and well thought out decisions.

I'm on the fence here but I do understand this POV. Part of me thinks we should overpay Pavelski to come for 3 years and forget about Panarin at 7. Then again, the Rangers actually being good would go a long way in developing these players, and if Gorton and Co. think Panarin brings them back to the playoffs next season, even as the 8th place team, then the signing is worth it. IMO.

What I can't really get onboard with is Signing Panarin to term, sucking for the next 2 years, and then having a massive issue when Kakko and Kravstov are due pay raises.

I don't really want to sign Panarin, but I REALLLY don't want to sign Panarin and get rid of Kreider for the sake of shedding cap. To me, it's both or none.

Signing Panarin is a win-now move, trading Kreider is a win-later move. I don't think a Kreider/Panarin straight up swap makes you that much better on its own. But going into the season with Panarin, Kreider, Buch, Kakko, Kravtsov on the wing is....good.

Panarin + Kreider Means no Buchnevich and maybe no ADA. And then you worry about Zibanejad's re-up cost.

No it doesnt. You can do Panarin at $12, Trouba at $7, ADA at $3, Buch at $4, Lemieux at $2. The only issue would be next season, with Shatty's buyout hit on the books, but Kreider's increase is the only thing to negotiate.

This is with trading Vesey, Strome and Namestnikov, buying out Shatty, and doing nothing with Smith or Staal. Nearly $2.5m under.
