No conditional picks to WIN if Trouba re-signs. NYR were not allowed to talk to him. Eligible for extension on July 1.

What is Eliotte insinuating with this tweet

Just that he's got one year left and Rangers weren't allowed to negotiate an extension prior.

He can still go UFA next summer. We may have only traded for 1 year of Trouba. Unlikely, tho.

Rebuild mode is over. Trouba is exactly the kind of Dman we needed. Maybe other teams were scared off by the Karlsson deal? How could he possibly have been so cheap?

Jets still had little leverage. Trouba wanted out plus the risk of not being able to sign him certainly had to scare some teams off (e.g. Islanders). Chevaldayoff was put in a very difficult position and the Rangers were lucky enough to benefit. Plus, I don't think the hockey world views Pionk as poorly as most on here do. He's still very young and on a cheap contract and certainly has offensive potential. Playing 3rd pair, like he belongs, on a good team might be just what he needs.

I think it comes down to the 1st rd pick. The other rumored teams interested were NJ (1), NYI (23), PHI (11), Detroit (6), TB - none, didnt offer (willing to part with, or, had a worse pick) than the Rangers. Winnipeg doesnt need a top 6 winger, nor a top 4 Dman. Pionk gives them a young guy with upside, that is cost controlled. Theyll be able to save enough money to possibly re-sign Myers, as well, leaving Pionk as a third pair guy - which he should be ok. Names out there like Ghost means you lose Trouba via trade, and Myers to free agency, and not getting Ghost + 11, which means no first round pick. Nolan Patrick's name was floating out there, but that would be tough to part with for potentially only 1 season of Trouba.

They only had 1 more season with Trouba, and cant wait until the deadline, because they need to re-sign Myers.

Maybe those other teams were not interested? If there was interest couldn’t they have traded for a pick earlier than 20? WPG pulled the trigger 4 days before the draft, so they must have had a handle on the market. Going to get real interesting with Panarin, or Kreider, and any buyouts.

Could have been teams were only interested in an extended Trouba, yeah

Interesting Winnipeg Sun interview, post-trade. Wouldn't talk about an extension but seems excited to come to MSG. Said negotiations would likely start in the morning. https://winnipegsun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/winnipeg-jets/personal-decision-for-trouba-jets-werent-the-issue-for-departing-defenceman/amp?__twitter_impression=true
