Pompeo: Melting sea ice presents 'new opportunities for trade'

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/06/polit...cil/index.html

'Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday praised the Arctic region -- and its rapidly shrinking levels of sea ice -- for its economic opportunities, despite continued warnings about the catastrophic effects of climate change."

... '"Arctic sea lanes could become the 21st century Suez and Panama Canals," Pompeo remarked.'

...'"America is the world's leader in caring for the environment," he said. Pompeo did not use the phrase "climate change" in his remarks. Asked about the omission in an interview with a Finnish newspaper, Pompeo said, "My view on this and President Trump's view on this is what we should put all our emphasis on is outcomes."'

If we focus on outcomes than we can look at Florida, in particular, Miami and Key West as case studies already affected by rising sea levels. Lessons learned in Florida can help planning for other cities in the United States.

This is one of the most absurd things that's ever been said.

This is the classic modern day doublespeak that's become the hallmark of the Trump political machine.

He's not wrong that there's likely a ton of economic opportunity for countries that have large swaths of inhospitable or inaccessible land due to ice cover. All five of them will assuredly find natural resources under that ice, and then, I suppose, whoever decides to break the peace treaty and try to conquer Antarctica should find stuff.

His comment about sea lanes is unbelievably stupid. There's exactly 7 countries with territory in the Arctic circle, and there's nothing blocking any country in that group from trading with or accessing each other aside from unbearable dumbassery re: our policies with Canada.

His comment about America being the world leader in caring for the environment is the classic "we're not last, therefore we're first" mentality. We're miles behind at least half the world here.

We have to stop letting morons like this take office.

Why Politicians Should Lie (May 6, 2010)
    https://www.usnews.com/opinion/artic...ans-should-lie

'POLITICIANS GET A BAD rap for their sometimes elusive relationship with the truth. Yet Martin Jay, author of The Virtues of Mendacity: On Lying in Politics, says there are times when lying may be the right thing to do.'

...'There's a so-called big lie that we associate with totalitarianism...In the United States, luckily, we don't have the capacity for that due to a relatively free press and a pluralist political system. What we have instead are many different competing half-lies, spins, rhetoric, or positions that hide the truth... I'm always very nervous when a politician claims that he or she alone has personal integrity, authenticity, and is a truth teller, and all opponents are scoundrels and liars.'

... 'We need to focus more on policies and their outcomes than on this kind of accusation of mendacity, which gets us nowhere.'

Woof, that was a decade ago.

Interesting to look back at that and realize how abjectly wrong the author was to assume American Exceptionalism could defend us against the "big lie"

Probably should be a different thread.

Confirmed that Pompeo steals my talking points from this board.

i'll never understand, regardless of political preference the idea that not doing everything possible to curb the polluting of the planet is a bad idea.
