I'd argue the 2020-2021 season is a season where I have the team earmarked for a wildcard spot. I wouldn't be too disappointed if it took another year, but I think they're going to be threatening playoffs then.

Somewhat tongue in cheek, but I think they win 2023-2024, just to usurp the 30th anniversary celebration.

I would agree with that. I think they’re a playoff team in 20-21. But I view that as part of the improvement process.
Two years of really bad play, 17-18 and 18-19, a 3rd season wherein they still miss the playoffs but are better and maybe have a shot at a spot late in the year in 19-20, and hopefully a solid playoff team in 20-21. Hopefully they then open a window of 3-5 seasons from 21-22 on where they are legit contenders.

Panarin is by no means a foregone conclusion, though I think they have a legitimate shot at him. But even with him, I don’t like their chances at making the playoffs. 20 points is a huge margin. Especially when they’ll be playing even more kids.

Honestly, I’d be happy this year if I saw just a few things. Good debuts from the rookies. Improvement from the other young guys we’re counting on moving forward, and an 8-12 point improvement in the standings resulting in meaningful hockey games in March and April. They certainly don’t need to rush the process, but the sooner you get your young core playing important games late in the season, the better off you are.

If they can by in large do those 3 things, the season would be a big success. Relative to the rebuild that is.

Rangers did finish 20 points out of a playoff spot.. with a roster built for a tank.

Carolina missed by 14 points last year and made it to the ECF.. Not optimal, but every year there are a few teams who make a big leap.

Not sure how anyone can say one way or the other what this roster will look like until you get past the draft, trades, buyouts, free agency and camp. Not saying NYR are a lock for a playoff spot this season, but objectively it's not out of the question. But the question is right now premature.

Getting enough wins to make the playoffs also depends on how long it takes to Jake Allen someone.

Pronman's done a ranking of the top prospects in the last 5 years heading into the draft. Kakko in 7th:

    7. Kaapo Kakko, 2019 draft:
Kakko had a fantastic season in Finland between Liiga and the World Championship. Some scouts think his season was more impressive than Aleksander Barkov’s at the same age. Kakko’s right on track to step into the league next season and be a cornerstone player for an NHL club’s (New York Rangers) rebuild.

    Top 6:
    1. McDavid
    2. Laine
    3. Matthews
    4. Hughes
    5. Eichel
    6. Dahlin

    Kaapo Kakko

    NHL player comparable: Peter Forsberg

The breakdown: “When you watch him play at whatever level, he uses his body and his power. The way he comes out of corners, the way he attacks the net – there’s a lot of similarities with the way he plays and the way Peter Forsberg plays.”

I'd take that every day of the week, twice on Sunday.

Still bitter about missing out on Hughes, and even more bitter that NJ gets him.

'Things aren't what they used to be' is the rallying cry of small minds. When men say things used to be better, they invariably mean they were better for them, because they were young, and had all their hopes intact. The world is bound to look a darker place as you slide into the grave. Joe Abercrombie, Best Served Cold.

Don't be bitter. Be thankful we lucked into getting Kakko. Even that was a miracle

Article in Philadelphia Inquirer today saying Flyers pick at 11 is available.
Not that they’d make a trade with the Rangers in all likelihood, but it is out there and they speculate it could be used in a package to Winnipeg for Trouba.

    Good list.
I think Id swap Laine and Matthews though.

    1- Mcdavid
    2- Matthews
    3- Laine
    4- Hughes
    5- Eichel
    6- Dahlin

He just had 82 pts at age 21?
Over PPG at age 20 and 21
.90 PPG average so far in his first 4 years.

I think Laine can be great.
    He seems disenchanted at times

I assumed he was talking about the prospect/hype prior to their respective draft. (Yes, its the 2nd paragraph. "ignoring what has transpired since [the player was drafted]")

In such case, I might put Hughes #2. Heard more about him, from a younger age, than Matthews.

    1. McDavid
    2. Hughes
    3. Matthews
    4. Eichel
    5. Laine
    6. Dahlin
    Lias Andersson for #AJT2019
