O Canada: Quest for Stanley Cup

Thread devoted to discussing the Stanley Cup drought of Canadian teams.... and which Canadian team will break through and win the next Stanley Cup.

Montreal Canadians were the last Canadian team to win Stanley Cup in 1993.
In 1994 the Rangers beat the Canucks 4-3 in the SCF.
In 2004 the Lightning beat the Flames 4-3 in the SCF.
In 2006 the Hurricanes beat the Oilers 4-3 in the SCF.
In 2007 the Ducks beat the Senators 4-1 in the SCF.
In 2011 the Bruins beat the Canucks 4-3 in the SCF.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._Cup_champions

Particularly relevant this year as Leafs, Jets, and Flames are SC contenders... and Canadiens and Oilers darkhorse threats.
    https://www.nhl.com/standings/2018/wildcard

With the Oilers domination in the 1980s, and the Canadiens and Leafs domination from the 1940s through the 1970s, this is a particularly long stretch to not have a Canadian Stanley Cup champion.

Leafs have the Lightning juggernaut to deal with in the East. West is wide open, so will be interesting how the Jets and Flames fare against teams like the Sharks and Predators.

Vegas won't get the credit they deserve until they actually win a cup, it's hilarious.
My money's on WPG, though it might not be this year.

Yup.... I keep hoping Vegas will fall apart. IF they get to the conference final I'll admit they exist, otherwise I'm pretending they are a desert mirage.

Sick team adds one of the BPA at the deadline and take the pressure off of him with a mega contract...And we're pretending they're a mirage? Yikes....

More plainly, I don't like Vegas. While they were a feel-good story for the NHL, I did not want them to win the cup last year. I want their fan base to have to wait at least a few years before winning the Cup. I think about how the Dallas Stars won a Cup, and how the fans in Minnesota felt. So yes, for many people, Vegas is a threat to win the Cup this year. But I continue to pretend they are not a factor. Clearer?

I like Vegas. Can't really think of any reason to dislike them. Good fans, good atmosphere, coach seems like a pretty nice guy, some excellent players there.

As for the question, I think all of the Flames, Leafs and Jets are well positioned to challenge in the next couple of years. I have a hunch neither of them will get over the line this season though. They seem like 3 really good teams with soft underbellies.

Its hard to pick against the Lightning this year, but I'd give Winnipeg the best chance. Winnipeg made it to the conference final last year, and I think a deep playoff run helps prepare a squad for future years.

    Toronto is just ridiculous

If Toronto can get through the first couple rounds, look out, there's a lot of offensive firepower, and Andersen is a quality goaltender.

So I'd say Winnipeg has got the best chance this year, Toronto has the best chance in the next three years, and Calgary is a fun team to root for.

Hate to say it, but Toronto will lose to Boston in the first round. They’re too soft for the playoffs. B’s in 5.

Yeah, Boston-Toronto is going to be fun (assuming standings don't change). Historically, Boston definitely more gritty. I think it's a 6 or 7 game series, and hope Toronto can find a way to advance.

If B’s have home ice, it’ll make it that much more difficult

Looks to me like Canada's best hopes are in the Western Conference, either the Jets or Flames. Leafs would likely have to go through Bruins, Lightning, and metro champ just to make SCF, Canadiens are scrambling just to get in. No clear favorite out West, but either Jets or Flames would benefit if the Lightning were knocked out.

    for first round series
    Leafs +140
    Jets even
    Flames -200

So only Flames are favored to get out of first round

Flames bounced in five games. After Calgary dominated game one, amazing how Colorado turned this series around. Calgary was an offensive juggernaut in the regular season, goal scoring dried up in the playoffs. Gaudreau had a series to forget, game five was especially rough as he failed to score on a penalty shot and multiple breakaways.

In game 5, Jets lost a two goal lead in the third period and gave up a stunning goal in the last minute to fall behind in their series with the Blues 3-2, try and stave off elimination tonight (Saturday). Leafs have managed to eke out a 3-2 lead, try and finish off the Bruins on Sunday.

In Game 4, Flames were the first Canadian team to get eliminated from the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Avalanche (shockingly) beat them by a score of
5-1 to advance to the second round and face the winner of the series between the San Jose Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights

In game 6, a slow start doomed the Jets, as a third period push falls one goal short. Canada has one remaining hope, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
