HENRIK!!! Hank just put on a show tonight. This is one thing we needed to cheer for considering how the season has gone so far.

The King has reclaimed his throne.

Seriously just shouted at the television louder than I have all season. That was a fucking victory. hahaha

Gary Bettman thinks this 3 on 3 gimmick shit is better than a World Cup and an Olympic tournament. Player's Association should take Ovechkin's lead and have everyone beg off next year.

Hockey took off in the US in large part because of the 1980 Olympics. Thankfully the Cold War is over. But so are All Star games; we see these guys every night on cable. The special that was seeing Marcel Dionne or Guy Lafleur or Wayne Gretzky is long gone. It's not selling anything. Those tournaments would be way better. And you would be asking owners only to shut down mid season once every 4 years and rejigger camp schedules to have a tournament in September once every 4 years too.And they would actaully sell your sport to a wider audience.

Sorry, but this is just not accurate. The NHL has already accepted that an ASG is for the existing and casual fan, it's not meant to draw in new fans.

The owners simply don't want to risk multi-million dollar investments in meaningless spectacles like a World Cup, or the Olympics for that matter, since the NHL has no right to even use any footage or images from the OLY to market the game.

A true national tournament is not a meaningless spectacle. It's made meaningless by things like the last WC, which was a farce.

The World Cup of soccer/football is obvious proof of my point, and plays a massive role in the sports continued popularity dominance. That's something that includes scheduled "away" time for players of all skill levels and affects all club levels of the sport in dozens of countries multiple times during every season. This is once every four years.

But sure, we can keep pretending that it's just too onerous in hockey.

Well, it can be argued that soccer's popularity is also based on the fact that it's the least expensive sport to play. You only need a ball.
