How Much Money Are The Islanders Losing?

The Islanders ownership bought the team thinking that the "guaranteed" payments from Barclays would make them profitable. It turned out that they were assured a lot less than media reports had it. With attendance poor (management passed off a lot of tickets on brokers at a discount and counted them as sold) both Barclays and the Islanders lost money, which is why they had a mutual parting. Now, added to the cost of buying the team, the ownership has the cost of its investment in the new arena. They will have to give a lot of revenue to their investment partners, and the arena probably won't be very profitable with one team in a saturated arena market. They also are going to have the tremendous expense of running the team for the next three years with dreadful attendance at Barclays, dreadful revenue at the Coliseum, and what is probably a less favorable deal with Barclays than the original one. They sold out the first few years on opening night at Barclays but got 12,100 this year. The got 8,700 for the second game. No one is going to go see the lame duck team at Barclays. The amount of money that these owners are losing and the scope of the debacle since they bought the team is mind boggling. The Islanders owners should have spent an hour late on a winter night waiting for a delayed connection at the Jamaica station before they bought the team. They obviously had never done that.

There's a real disconnect between how large and potentially profitable their ownership view their fan base and what it really is. They weren't drawing flies in Uniondale. Barclays is a lousy configuration for the NHL, but these morons didn't even try to make a go of it. At a loss how the Belmont arena works any better; no real transit at a site that has a mess of highways converge into an automotive nightmare every week night.

Just move them already. I don't know why the NHL continues to try to make this happen. Arizona is the only team in that market, so it makes sense to try to keep them there.

The Islanders aren't just part of the tri-state, but are in the middle of Buffalo, Boston, Philly, Wash and PItt as well. The market doesn't need a scrub team, just kill the name and move them already.

Back about 20 years ago Bettman said that three teams in the metro NY area was one too many, but he has since changed his tune and acts like the Islanders must stay here come hell or high water. He also opposes all moves so that there can be endless expansion (and fees) to new markets. You don't have to be a Rangers fan to see that this team should have been moved 25 years ago. I've always favored moving the Islanders to Houston or Quebec and installing a new franchise in the Nassau Coliseum. It would be called the Islanders, the uniforms would be the same, and the Stanley Cup Banners would still hang. But the franchise would be in the AHL...

Isn't that what's already happened...

Im more pissed off that there talking about closing the racetrack for 3 years during the construction. friday night twilight in june is nirvana for me.

on the flip side they are talking about running the belmont at aqueduct instead of lengthening the program at Saratoga, where they make the bulk of their dough for the year.

NYRA might be worse run than the Islanders.

Running the Belmont at a dump like Aqueduct is embarrassing. It draws over 100k when the Triple Crown in in play, 85K if not. And they'd do it for 8806 people who might waste their time at an Islanders game some winter night.
