The D looked dull and undynamic with Hajek and ADA missing. Like to see what the team looks like when they are in the lineup. I'm convinced Hajek is currently a better player than Staal, and the on ice product would immediately look/perform better if we could swap the two. However, circumstances do not permit this move.
Spot on G. Quinn should give Staal an effing Atlantic City scooter to get around on. He also made some terrible decisions leaving Pionk to defend 2 on 1's and Hank to bail him out.
    Hank was really solid.
I am losing patience watching Kreider.
Howden looks like he belongs. Quinn made a good call with this kid.

Staal for me is a complete relic.
I get that he’s still statistically our best shut down D, and I’m not trying to say he isn’t good at what he does, but imo most of that is negated by his almost complete lack of skillset needed to play the game of hockey.
His foot speed is laughable. He’s a pitiful stick handler. He’s a poor passer of the puck. He has zero offensive instincts and makes poor decisions on the puck constantly.
It might not be a huge problem right now, but as this team moves toward one that sees more of the puck he’ll be a total anchor.

That's probably all accurate, his outlet passes were so bad they were actually pretty funny, but I also saw a guy that's still a complete boss in front of his net and below the goal line.

He still does a couple things really well.

    That’s basically what I’m saying.
Very good at what he does, but the question is whether that is negated by everything else that he does really poorly.

Shattenkirk is their worst defender and makes the worst pinches and decisions. Now he does do other things in the offensive zone that off sets his amateur level defending but picking on Staal to me is a half truth to what ails this defense. In my opinion only it’s hard to constantly criticize Staal and leave out Shattenkirk. Staal is done no doubt. We pay Shattenkirk close to 7 million a year for something we can get out of ada. Furthermore the things that are constants in Shattenkirks game is exactly what keeps ada in the press box even though those things happen far less frequently with ada.

This issue right here will be the most telling part of what Quinn is. Does play matter or does the paycheck and name? Is there accountability? Is the standard the same for everyone?

Looks promising as it seems Namesnikov is a scratch today. Yes McLeod looks like he’s playing. While McLeod sucks, Namestnikov needs to be held accountable. If Shattenkirk plays like he has here and in game 1 I expect to see him in the press box too

The entire defense is a bunch of #5 and #6s. That means slow, inconsistent, and unreliable. Doesnt make sense picking on 1 of the few. As Phil said, its an 8-car pile up. They're all undriveable cars

Ok. From 2011-2012 through 2016-2017, Shattenkirk was 2nd among all NHL d-men in PP points with 131. He trailed on Karlsson who had 146; however, Karlsson played 509 more minutes of PP time during that span. At .10 points per mintue on the PP, Shattenkirk is about .02 points per minute better than every other NHL d-man. There is a reason Shattenkirk got paid. Its also his first regular season game in 10 months, while coming off of knee surgery.

Looks like Namesnikov is on a short leash and rightfully so. Couldn't help but notice his attitude when Quinn tapped him to go serve the too many men penalty at the end of the game. I think the kid thinks he deserves a much better fate and certainly playing further up the lineup and not the 4th line. As for Staal, he certainly fails the eye test to me but I guess the stats don't back that up. I don't see anyway he ever sits either barring injury. As for Shattenkirk I don't get what the attraction is for this guy when his D zone work is so brutal. So hoping he can at least pile up the points that LLTK points out.

It kind of does, because whilst he’s our best shutdown D, Staal is the only one of them incapable of playing hockey the way it’s played these days.

Bad decisions on both sides of the blueline caused at least 3 odd man rushes. You'd think Pionk was the wily defensive minded vet, judging just the Pred game. However, as mentioned this system is new for Staal too. He's not dumb, he'll watch the film and at least get better in his judgement. Unfortunately, it will be just enough to keep his slow ass in the lineup.

Shatty, also gets some slack for his first game since injury. He also makes hazzardous decisions in how he plays his man, defends a rush or reacts to a turnover. Best would be to move on from these two players this year, so we can truly work on fixing the blue line with the rest of the guys. Like Holden last year (Pionk et al), these two block the future,

No sir. Surprised you say based on some of your optimism. Skjei is good, watch him this year. Pionk has a chance to be a top 4. ADA needs NHL ice time and Hajek is a top prospect ready and waiting in the wings. McQuaid is not a car wreck and brings respect.

Good post, but it is really both of them. The combination effect means a lot of game time with holes in our D. They eat up the mistakes we should be affording to Pionk and ADA. I think many of us aren't getting worked-up over it because of our low expectations for the year and McQuaid is a UFA. Some of us may feel differently come the trade deadline, when we are thinking about next year.

Also, don't put to much into this being just a Quinn decision, it is more organizational. This lineup is a starting point. It will get better from here as the inevitable will reveal itself. At the moment, we need to give the proverbial 10 (or 20) games, to get some feel on the personnel and how they are playing.
