N.Y. Daily News Hit with Layoffs, Reducing Editorial Staff by Half

    https://deadspin.com/the-new-york-da...ted-1827804989

The parent company of the New York Daily News reduced the 99 year-old tabloid’s newsroom staff by approximately 50 percent on Monday, and the sports department was especially hard hit. Per multiple reports, a sports staff of roughly 35 people was reduced to nine, including just five writers.
I was looking at the baseball reports on both teams and the feed was from the AP. Looks like all Rangers reporting in the NYDN will be from the AP.

Were they really creating anything of value over at the Daily News?

I enjoyed the Daily News at the end of the day on the train for light reading.

I mean that seems right. 1 person per team and then some floaters for Golf/Tennis/Horses, etc.

According to the report only 5 of the 9 are writers.

This. After they posted photos on the front cover of the guy that died who was stuck between the subway train and platform, I lost all respect for them. The Post is just as bad, I don’t know how they are still in print. And going to an online pay site is the wrong business model, who pays for news online. It’s like the Athletic, you can get all the same stuff for free on other sites, why would anyone pay for it.

Pretty ironic that the link on massive layoffs is from Deadspin

Daily News price going up to $1.50. A 50% jump after laying off 50% of the staff. LOL!

After chopping half the people in the Daily News newsroom on Monday, parent company Tronc is now planning to hike the price of the daily paper by 50 percent starting Aug. 6.
The daily price will jump to $1.50 from $1. The price of the Sunday paper will also jump 50 cents, to $2.
