Ok, lets amuse ourselves in the offseason. I think we can come up with 1 of these every other day or so. The following scenario happened today and there ended up being a deep debate on it.

You?re down 2-1 with :17 left.

You just took a penalty.

Face off in your zone.

Where?s your goalie, and why?

My goalie is on the bench because of these outcomes of the faceoff:

1) My team wins the draw. I have an extra attacker ready to join the play.

2) Tied faceoff. I have an extra player to join the scrum to try to get control of the play.

3) Lost faceoff. This is the key reason I pull the goalie in this scenario. With a goalie in, the other team will likely attempt to play keep away to run the clock down. With the extra man in that situation, they have an advantage in doing that. At 5 v 5 and the net empty, its more difficult to keep control of the puck and they are more apt to try a shot on my net. If they score, too bad but we were losing anyway, but if they don't, they're giving up control of the puck, giving my team the opportunity to recover and use what ever time is left to try to tie up the game.
