I'd assume its his NHL contract. Not sure if he had an actual KHL contract last year, since he was on loan from the Rangers to the KHL team.

He's terminating his NHL contract with the Rangers. KHL deals have to be bought out by the player.

Correct. He'll be able to sign directly with a KHL club now for much more than he made on his Rangers contract.

Probably just decided he'd prefer to stay in Russia, make more money, and not have to battle for a spot/play in Hartford.

Rangers have a logjam of middle six defenders both at the NHL level and in their system. Probably sees making the team anytime soon as a long shot verses the money he can make in the KHL. He'd also be a UFA as far as the NHL is concerned, so if he wanted to try for a different team he'd have that opportunity too.

Not counting Bereglazov, 46. Will lose DD, McLeod, Carey, Sproul, Pavelec, Catenacci, and Albert once FA starts, so that makes 39. I assume Gettinger, Howden, Day, and Hajek will all turn pro and no longer be exempt so that bumps it back up to 43. Then they have to decide if they're keeping the 5 minor league RFA's Bigras, Tambellini, Nieves, Fogarty, and Mazanec.
