Stephen Hawking, Best-Known Theoretical Physicist of His Time, Dies at 76

LONDON (AP) — Stephen Hawking, whose brilliant mind ranged across time and space though his body was paralyzed by disease, has died, a family spokesman said.

“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said in a statement.

The best-known theoretical physicist of his time, Hawking wrote so lucidly of the mysteries of space, time and black holes that his book, “A Brief History of Time,” became an international bestseller, making him one of science’s biggest celebrities since Albert Einstein.

Even though his body was attacked by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, when Hawking was 21, he stunned doctors by living with the normally fatal illness for more than 50 years.

He's no Neil De Grasse Tyson or Bill Nye, that's for sure.

They don't belong in the same sentence. Tyson and Nye are science educators. Hawking is going to go down in the history books beside the likes of Einstein, Newton, Darwin, and Tesla.

Will he though? Not trying to poop on his legacy and fair warning I'm supremely ignorant but :

Einstein had theories that were proven true and contributed to actual contributions.
    Newton ^
    Testla ^
Darwin Not so much, but his theory of evolution might the most tangible non-absolutely proven theory in the world.

What, tangibly, has SH produced? I'm genuinely curious. His discovery led to black hole research and ultimately made that possible. But as for being a tangible producer of actual contributions to the modern world, I don't think he's in that category.

The way I see it is that all the above had a direct impact on the mass public, whereas I see SH as having more of a massive impact within the science community while also being an attractive personality for several reasons.

Again: I'm massively dumb when it comes to this kind of thing and I actually like the man (as much as you can like a scientist). I just don't see him in that light, but could absolutely be wrong.

Hawking radiation. His work on black holes is incredible.

Not disagreeing. But I don't see his work to be as tangible (today) as any of the men listed.

might be but it does not effect our lives in any way when compared to scientists you used above. I think he was well-known around the world not for his work but for his illness. not many people understand quantum mechanics or black hole radiation but everyone knows SH.

That's fair. I'd still rank him ahead of educators like NGT and Nye. Ahead of Krauss and Kaku as well.

oh for sure. no one heard of NGT until he started showing up on the science channel. he became famous when he hosted Cosmos but he cant even be compared to Carl Sagan in any scientific achievements.

I don't even know who Krauss and Kaku are

Yeah, obviously, the other two aren't even scientists lol... My point wasn't to compare the two. It was to stir the pot. Mission accomplished.

They're both theoretical physicists and authors. Krauss does a lot of public speaking, but is currently embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations.

have they actually discovered or working on discovering anything new? or are they just teach what others discovered?
