Vince McMahon Bringing Back XFL in 2020

At the end of ESPN’s recent “30 for 30” episode about the XFL, WWE owner Vince McMahon and former NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol — the two men who spearheaded the failed early-aughts competitor to the NFL — mused about possibly giving it another go.

“Do you ever have any thoughts about trying again?” Ebersol asked McMahon, per Pro Football Talk’s transcription.

“Yes I do,” McMahon replies. “I don’t know what it would be. I don’t know if it’s going to be another XFL or what it may be or how different I would make it. It seems like in some way it would tie in either with the NFL itself or the owners.”

And then Friday, a journalist and pro-wrestling fan named Brad Shepard tweeted this out:

@TheBradShepard: EXCLUSIVE: Vince McMahon is looking to bring back the XFL and may announce it on January 25th, 2018.

Shepard didn’t provide much in the way of follow-up to that tweet, but Deadspin’s David Bixenspan asked a WWE spokesperson about it. The wrestling company neither confirmed nor denied that McMahon actually was starting a new football league, but it sure seems as if he’s thinking about it, at the very least.

Or, you know, the market for an NFL competitor never being greater at the moment.

The NFL already has a competitor, it's called NCAA Football. Most of the fans end up there.

I wonder what makes him think this time it will be better.

A contract which ESPN can barely afford (life support). Moreover, the CFL is regionally viable in Canada due to tweaks and a few key changes without a US audience and/or marketing team. Beyond that, the NCAA is littered with players who may be fringe NFL players or may seek financial gain during their formative years rather than losing it all at the college level for a scholarship alone.

Streaming is bigger than ever, and if the announcement is anything to show, this taps into the esports demographic and will be viable. Is this the new NFL? Probably not. Is this a new 3rd brand between NCAA/NFL - it could very well be.

To put it into wrestling perspective, as it seems apt. They're not trying to be the WWE or WCW, they're trying to be ROH.

this may be an argument for basketball, but NCAA football is extremely developmental.

Developmental to play in the NFL. The XFL is about entertainment and doesn't require the intense study and development the NFL does.

You're probably not going to see a Heisman front-runner cut out of NCAA to go to the XFL, but I wouldn't be shocked to see some other NCAA players head there as tnyr said.

Exactly. They're not going to dominate either market, but there's a strong niche to be had with many fringe players. Why should a non-studious player go to the NCAA when he could play vs men in the XFL which is safer, pays better, and has more realistic expectations as to what he'll come to see in the NFL *should he choose/be able to make it*.

I'm not saying that's a slam dunk, but it definitely raises some eyebrows and if executed correctly, could be a massive win.

Funny enough I was doing market research on this a few weeks ago unrelated to the announcement.

He knows. It's a safer, more rule-strict league that's willing to pay college players and pro players alike.

What he couldn't do was overemphasize anything as the announcement was likely to get ahead of any potential leaks as they negotiate team/city deals and throw together an ensemble of network contracts/infrastructure.

It's also highly profitable. A profit, of which, the players rarely see. Coupled with the highlights to concussion/player health - it could be a selling point.

Doubt if it will be successful. At this juncture, tough to compete with the NFL.

    Missing the point.
