Rick Nash on Playing for a Contract: "I've got to be better"

    https://www.nhl.com/news/new-york-ra...?tid=277548856

"I don't have a contract for next season," the New York Rangers forward said Monday, "so that's what I'm playing for."

Nash has never gone into an NHL season without the security of being signed for the next one. He has never been an unrestricted free agent. He might be July 1 because he is going into the last season on the eight-year, $62.4 million contract he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on July 3, 2009, when he had one year remaining on a five-year contract.
    Out: Girardi, Klein, Stepan, Raanta
    In: Shattenkirk, Desharnais, Pavalec, DeAngelo/Bereglazalov/Pionk

I hope that means he doesnt stay away from the front of the net.
Last season, he was skating strong, carry the puck to the net, crashing the net. Took a shot upstairs and that was the end of that. To be effective, he needs to go to those areas and get to work.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out Rick.

If he takes a team friendly $4-4.5M contract would you change your mind about keeping him? He's been a very good two-way player...not quite up to his salary, I get that but at a more manageable CAP rate I'd say he was more than 'serviceable.'

I would, but I'd rather make a bigger move. Besides, we don't have cap space to give him 4m per.

Continues to be over-rated & underpaid! It's not always about the $$$$ as so many fans are obsessed with. It seems, judging by his latest comments, that he sees the handwriting on the wall. Skate into never never land, tricky Rick.

I would, but $4.5 is probably high since he's been hurt so much the last four years. Had he been playing 80 games, it's a no-brainer, he's probably closer to $5m.

If I'm Gorton, I'd try to go length to cut down AAV. Something like 4x$15m. That's a little under $4m per year, but it takes him until he's 37. There are probably teams out there willing to give him much higher AAV for a shorter-term though.

I think he easily gets better offers than that on the market. Look what Marleau just got.

Agreed, Josh. I actually think he'll get $6M (per) offers. Easy.

Maybe for a year or two. But I don't think he gets $6m if he goes 20-40 again.
