Here’s a scenario few would have imagined: An NBA star running away from LeBron James and toward the Knicks. But that’s one possibility that Kyrie Irving craves, according to an ESPN report.

The star guard asked Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert for a trade last week and requested he be dealt to the Knicks, Spurs, Heat or Timberwolves.

Any deal sending Irving to New York would likely involve Carmelo Anthony, who wants to play on either the Cavaliers or the Rockets. Irving, a New Jersey native, has three years and just over $60 million remaining on his contract.

The 25-year-old would fit perfectly with the Knicks’ plan to build a young core alongside Kristaps Porzingis. But the Knicks certainly will not be alone in pursuing Irving, and it will not be limited to the teams on his list as he does not have a no-trade clause.

Irving, according to the report, is tired of sharing the on-floor focus with James, who was stunned by Irving’s demands.
