Rangers Sign Kevin Shattenkirk to 4-Year/$26.6M Contract; $6.65M AAV

It's happening. The biggest name in free agency, Kevin Shattenkirk, is a New York Ranger according to multiple reports:

@TSNBobMcKenzie: . @frank_seravalli reporting an expected four-year deal with an AAV of $6.65M:

The New Rochelle native officially agreed to a four-year deal worth $26.6M a few hours after the market for Unrestricted Free Agents opened at noon Eastern time, bringing to a close more than two years worth of speculation that the 28-year old wished to suit up for the Blueshirts.

This is about as good as we could expect from signing Shatty. Fills some serious holes as a puck moving right handed defenseman with offense and pp point. Should also open up Mcd even though he's not the best defender, but AV can slide Smith to the top pairing to close out games.

Considering the terms and values of other UFA or RFA defensemen already signed this year, this deal has to be viewed as the first great moment of Gorton's tenure. I could honestly care less how Shattenkirk plays out on this team, the fact is that Gorton lured him here for lower term than he could certainly sign for and what is likely a fair market value for his services. Barring inclusion of a NMC this is a stingy deal for the best defenseman to hit free agency in quite a long time. Well done.

Will be nice to see a functioning PP instead of the dreck it has been. Good job by Gorton.

The fact this is only four years is incredible. I honestly can't believe they got him for less than six. And less than $7M per.

Clearly he wants to be here. Left a year or 2 and some coin on the table.

I'm pretty shocked as well... when wast the last time a UFA as highly desired as him was signed for 4 years? He'll only be like 32 at the end of this deal

I do think he's slightly overrated and probably didn't get the offers he was expecting, but still. He must genuinely want to play here... for some reason.

Mcdonagh is no slouch either. Doesn't have a hard shot but contributes in other ways

At some point I would think Graves is going to replace Staal as well and he can score goals too.

Very good term and palatable AAV. This won't break us and I'm excited to see a PP that can actually generate consistently.

not true at all. Fast isnt getting anything big and zib will probably be 4.5-5 mil per. Plus they could trade holden for more space

Close to no cap room? we're @ 8.35, 11.25 when Klein retires, 12.9 if they can get Holden traded. -5.5 for Zib and 2 for fast and we're @ 5.9 left to play with.
