Thoughts on a Deal with Dallas?

Just read an article talking about Dallas' young defensive core needing a vet on the backend. Thoughts on a Girardi buyout and deal to send Staal to Dallas? Maybe if the Golden Knights take Raanta, we could swing to take Lehtonen or Niemi in return, not that either is a premier back up but do they have any pieces we would want in return? Not too familiar with their players outside of Seguin and Benn. Rangers weren't linked to them, just a spitballing idea on my part.

Girardi for Lehtonen, then buyout Lehtonen, maybe. But I don't see why "need a veteran" means "take a really bad contract for a player in staggering decline". This seems like more wishful thinking than it does realistic proposal.

I don't think Girardi or Staal are possible to trade. They're both 3rd pair Dmen making 1st pair money. Like I said elsewhere, Girardi's buyout hurts less than Staal's so I think that's the only play. Staal can be serviceable so long as he's not getting major minutes from AV... but we all already knew that.

Dallas needs to dump both those goalies, IMO, but we don't want or need them.

I was just in an airport and met a Stars fan. Perhaps, this was his wishful thinking, but he said they'd probably buy out one of their goalies. He mentioned which one, but my memory is shot.

Lehtonen or Niemi would be an underperforming and incredibly expensive backup. Would love to somehow grab Honka, but we don't really have what they're looking for. Unless they wanted Klein or Holden for a draft pick.

If they're trading for Niemi (who has been linked as the buyout candidate), I'd imagine the Rangers will do the same. They have options internally to task for the backup role, or they'd simply sign a UFA IMO.

According to nhl.com Dallas is willing do deal their No 3 pick for an established player.

Do you see any possibility for us to make a deal? Maybe for that pick plus Julius Honka?

I don't know what the price would be for the pick, but you can't rebuild without quality picks

In that case, yeah, if you're willing to deal McDonagh to them. Probably more.

    For Honka and the #3?

You're talking Raanta, Buch (or someone similar) and our first rounder just to open the door.

And furthermore, why do we want the #3OA pick?

Makar. That's a way you fix this defense, but there's really no deal to be had without throwing everything at Dallas. Doesn't make sense.

Is there a kid you can draft at #3 that immediately makes this team's blue line better?
    Will coach play him?
    Is he NHL ready?
