Capitals Have Tried Everything ? Except Trading Ovechkin

You can strengthen the support system until all the spinach in the world has been consumed, but it is difficult to imagine management doing much more than signing Justin Williams and Matt Niskanen as free agents and trading for T.J. Oshie and Kevin Shattenkirk over the past two years to accomplish that objective.

You can pick apart Karl Alzner and Tom Wilson all you want. You can run through the pluses and minuses of another coach or even run through another coach if you think there is a better one out there than Barry Trotz.

But what do you do when your signature player, your franchise player, is never the best player on the ice when it counts the most?

Ovechkin remains one of the most compelling athletes in the NHL. But he will turn 32 before next season starts. His recklessly physical style of play has taken a toll. He is coming off a year in which he took the second-fewest shots of his career. He scored 16 even-strength goals, by far the lowest full-season total of his 12-year career (25 in both 2010-11 and 2011-12), that tied for 67th in the NHL.

And he has four years remaining on a contract that carries a $9,538,462 million cap hit through 2020-21. That makes him tradeable only for a player or combination of players carrying a similar obligation, and only to a team for which Ovechkin would waive his no-move clause.

The Capitals fans likely would buy into an Ovechkin deal at this point. But there is surely no guarantee that owner Ted Leonsis would be amenable to moving on from the individual who almost singularly transformed the Caps into a power brand in the league and a vibrant product in D.C. and for whom he always demonstrated the utmost support. If Ovechkin is traded, it will be an ownership decision.

I really feel like the people who are proponents for these "nuclear options" of trading players like Lundqvist and Ovechkin think that it's just some sort of trivial thing. Everything revolves around these players. In the case of Ovechkin, the Capitals are where they are today because of Ovechkin. He's more than just a player on the roster who is just as easily traded as the next guy. No, they're special, whether fans/writers like it or not. And it may not be explicitly written in their contracts, but there's an understanding between these types of players and their organizations that you don't just bail on each other when the going gets rough. These players earned the right to stick it out through the long haul and see success with their franchise because they are the franchise. The converse is also true.

Alex Ovechkin Says Hamstring, Knee Injuries Were Not Tears, Won't Need Surgery

Washington Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin confirmed Friday he won't need offseason surgery after battling through hamstring and knee injuries during the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Ovechkin said he tried to fight through the pain to help the Caps advance, per ESPN.com. The team's run ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

"You don't want to play with any sort of injury, obviously," he said. "Of course, you don't feel 100 percent, you don't [have] strength in your leg, but you play through that, you know? Some players play with broken hand, broken leg, and you know, because it's the playoffs. You have to sacrifice your body to get success and get the result."

BJs bailed on Nash and I think are better for it.

  • 2 weeks later...
Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan revealed Tuesday that the Caps could trade superstar left winger Alexander Ovechkin if someone offered a "legitimate hockey deal," but for now, he expects the forward to remain a "big part" of the team moving forward.

"I think if the Washington Capitals wanted to trade him?and that's an if?I think they'd have no problem finding a partner," Friedman said. "Alexander Ovechkin would sell tickets. He would sell out buildings. And even though we're talking about this being a down year for him, he still scored 33 goals, and he can make your power play lethal. I don't think they would have any trouble trading Alexander Ovechkin if they wanted to."
