Staal or Girardi – If Only One Goes, Who?

Simple question. Off the cuff I tend to think Girardi simply because it's a shorter buyout (six years to Staal's eight), and due to age (33 to 30). I've read a few arguments that make me contemplate Staal instead, but the real kicker for me is not trusting AV not to go right back to McDonagh-Girardi first chance he gets.

staal fucks up more noticeably but girardi is consistently worse. both are absolutely awful, but Girardi is slighty worse, passable playoff performance notwithstanding.

not to mention that staal's buyout gives my eyes herpes.

Their buyouts may suck but one of them has to go.

Girardi. He has slowed down tremendously, and basically since Torts left, his style is basically useless here. He is breaking down at a rapid pace, and seems like recently he is making more and more mistakes. Staal makes mistakes, but I can live withbthemybecause he also has some good def naive plays, and he isn't eating top pair minutes.

Assuming that the trade market was tested and failed, and they didn't want to waive NTCs, I think you buy out Girardi. Staal has a better chance at future value, imo, while I think G is on a strict decline, even though he was the better player in the playoffs this year.

Neither is tradeable. Girardi's buyout sucks the least. There's your answer.

Staal or Girardi – If Only One Goes, Who?

I think Staal is tradable to, for something at least. Would likely require a bad contract coming the other way though.

But IF, and it's a big IF, AV actually used G as a 7th D for the rest of his career and he never sees more than 5/6th pairing minutes, would you still buy him out? Playing maybe 40 games a year and ideally zero come playoff time.

Yes. It's absurd to carry around a $5.5M cheerleader.

I think youre better off keeping them, honestly. Both can still play... not at the same level, and not the same number of games.
The problem, aside from cap hit, is supporting cast. I've always promoted sitting players on a regular basis, for no other reason than rest. This is what both of these guys needs. We saw, as the season went on, they struggled when they were overplayed. Both were "normal" 3/4 dmen when well rested and healthy. Unfortunately, this scenario doesnt work when the other options are... nothing close to being NHL defensemen, as were the options for this past season. At this point, we have a few guys coming up through the system that should be able to get games here and there. Additionally, the Rangers have lucked out by having a few guys that can play either side. This could be extremely beneficial in keeping both healthy, rested, and effective, as well as exposing younger players to the NHL at a limited basis. Plus... I'm sure we will see more amnesty buyouts, or other options to unload these guys without paying upto $7m of dead cap space during extremely important season.

I just don't understand now anyone can see these guys as anything but liabilities. Yes, they can "still play", but not well. No team with both of these defenseman in their top-6 will win a cup, unless the other four players are Hedman, Karlsson, Subban, and OEL. I don't see anything to suggest that either of these players are competent any lobger, they are both outshot and outscored when they are on the ice.

Not to mention the fact that if we do get players who are better, who knows whether or not Vigneault will even play them less. Smith and Skjei are certainly better players but Staal and Girardi were STILL out there defending leads despite not being capable of doing so competently.

Buying out both is probably extreme, but if it's the only option and no one will take, one of them must be bougjt out. Any season that features both of these players on the team is a wasted season in my books.

    Girardi.

They both stink... I'd rather keep the younger stink, it's presumably rotting at a less accelerated rate... in a perfect world would get rid of both..

Buyout Staal for a number of reasons.

The Rangers have more depth on the left, while on the right there is room for Girardi on the bottom pair. He also had a bounce back season in part because he didn't play as many games as usual. I limit him to 60 on the season, no back-to-backs.

Staal provides a slightly better defensive game over Girardi, but Girardi is better in the offensive zone. He is actually a smart pincher and can get his shot on net. Staal's idea of offense is to carry the puck deep into the left corner, then put a terrible angle shot on goal or just turn the puck over. Neither springs the play.

Staal has a full NMC, Girardi's will have a 15 team NTC after July 1st. His actual salary drops a little the final two seasons so with some retention he might be tradeable.

Girardi has had many more injuries lately, so there is a decent chance he retires before his 3 remaining years are up.

The Rangers can also still reconsider buying out Girardi's final two seasons if it makes sense down the line.

I'd hold for another year on both, probably buy out later.

I agree with Josh. I thought both were fine in the playoffs. They're paid too much, obviously, but I don't understand how buying them out at this stage makes the team better.
