I'll be surprised if teams don't offer 7+ for Shattenkirk.

We will let Smith walk and get Shhattenkirk, just watch
Personally I love Smith and want him back, don't want to overpay for Shatty even if it's frontloaded
Like to maybe give Graves a shot and see if defensively maybe we can do something via a trade(stepan,Hayes) maybe

Call me crazy but if it's between the two, I stick with Smith and get another D man via trade.

Thats not crazy at all, I would do the same. Smith for 3.5m x 2-3 years > Shatty 6.5-7m x 6-7 years anyday.

We dont need a superstar offensive D-man. We need a solid D-core that can play D and give the puck to the forwards. McD and Skjei both have decent enough offensive qualities to play on the PP. Skjei (and arguably McD aswell) will just get better over the years.

In my perfect world we would resign Smith, buy out G and make a trade including Hayes + for a solid RHD that can play With McD. Then we would look at a D-core something like this:

McD - New (dont know who, but there are some options)
    Skjei - Smith
Staal - Either one of the young new signings or a UFA.

Going forward I think this is something to work on. We have some good looking D prospect now aswell. I have been hugely impressed by Skjei this year and he is only going to be better, McD is a stud, Smith has been a very positive surprise and Staal is good enough to play on a third pair.

Smith over Shattenkirk all day long. The known is a positive and the unknown isn't worth the gamble when we would be spending a fortune on another possible albatross contract. Build the team, dont buy it. We need a replacement for Holden and if that comes by way of trade of kevin hayes, I'm cool with it.

Other UFA's available this off season:
    Alzner, Oduya, Kulikov, Daley, Russell
    Thoughts?

Kulikov and Daley are the only two I'd show much interest in. Maybe Oduya on a really short-term (one-year) deal. Alzner and Russel I have zero interest in. Russell, in fact, I have negative interest in.

I would try to sign Alzner and re-sign Smith at this point.

Another Left Handed defenseman? Who will probably get $4.5+ million.
Isnt the Rangers need a righty?

I was going to say exactly this before I realized he was a lefty lol.

If he can play the right - or I guess if Mac could - he'd be a good replacement for G on that pair. I'd rather have Smith and Alzner than just Shatty.

    Stay away.

Either make a trade or let the young guys they just signed get a crack at it.

Exactly. if he want NY so bad...make it on our terms. He's been nothing to write home about in the playoffs.

Saw worse than that during the playoffs. He's just not good on the defensive side of the puck.

Do not want for what he will cost.

That was moreso Ovechkin being lazy on the puck than a poor chip up the boards by Shattenkirk.

Agreed. Shatty is on his backhand with no other options. Ovy wasn't lazy, but he was too low.
