Anyone got a handy-dandy up-to-date list of options?
Klein, Holden, Grabner, and Raanta all would be available more than likely, and offer more than Fast for a team that will rely on defense and goaltending to be competitive.

Klein is a UFA and, if Vegas is going to be a defensive team, then Fast should be their top target. There's going to be a dozen Holdens available.

Klein still has 1 more year on his deal, but I agree that if Vegas is going the defnsive route, then Fast is the perfect candidate.

I think it'll be Grabner or Raanta. Raanta will be a candidate to be their starter, if not a fantastic backup to try and steal games for a developing team.

I think Grabner is a lot more likely than Raanta.

There are so many goalies available (Grubauer, Korpisalo, Pickard, Darling, Kuemper) who provide the same presence as Raanta with potentially higher long-term upside, I just have a hard time seeing Raanta being their pick.

Maybe it's just me, but Raanta is better than all of the goaltenders you mentioned. For long term outlook sure, but you are trying to establish a fan base and have a somewhat not embarrassing product on the ice. Korpisalo or Grubauer maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised if we are looking for a new backup next year.

I think you'd have a hard time making an argument that Raanta is better than Darling or Grubauer. Both could probably be a number 1 right now. Regardless, Raanta isn't such an upgrade over anybody that he'll make or break whether or not the team is embarrassing. They're probably going to be terrible regardless.

But you also have to account for who else the other teams are listing. Is Washington or Chicago going to make a better player available than Holden, Grabner, Fast, Lindberg? I think that's kind of doubtful. Who would you rather have, Raanta and Jay Beagle or Grubauer and Fast? Darling also makes sense because he's a UFA, they can just sign him. Why draft Raanta when you could, potentially, have Darling, Grubauer and Fast? Not to mention other FA goalies.

Obviously there are a thousand moving pieces and what-ifs, but I'm just not really seeing where Raanta provides enough value over other goalies to justify passing up on some of the guys the Rangers will be exposing.

Super bump! Pretty much a full calendar year later. Doesn't anyone like Jesper as I do. No chit chat about him on his thread? Maybe because he is so solid and little bad to talk about. @thirtyONE......was your question answered? Thinking Jesper will be wearing a letter sometime soon. But if he isn't, that's simply because he is too quiet in the LR. (not sure how I would know this)

Anyway, I bumped this because I've aways wondered about this.

    New players come for pre-season
Equiptment manager (I suppose) offers each new player a list of available #'s......right?

So, we are assuming that when Jesper chose #19, the Rangers had no clue they would do this for Jean?
I mean, why was this # even an option?

Good idea to bump this thread, Larry. My take on Fast is that he is 1) consistently reliable, 2) not going to hurt you while on the ice, 3) always gives you an honest shift, and 4) every team that has had success has at least one of these guys on their team. I have no problem with him on the roster. Would I like more goals from him? Of course. I also like the way he can fore-check keep other team's scorers off their game and relatively unproductive.

in my mind he's what i'd call a lunch pail guy. u can plug him anywhere on any of the lines. every team needs guys like him. have to keep him cost controlled however.

I've been really considering buying a Jesper Fast jersey

Just a hard working guy who can do a little bit of everything, is reliable, and has a history of stepping up in playoff games when it matters.

The comeback from 3-1 against Washington doesn't happen without Fast. He was a key factor on both game 5 and game 7 OT goals

Voted players' player twice in a row. The players may even know something that posters on this board don't. As for his good plus rating, I can remember many goals on plays in which he did something essential but did not get an assist. Put on an offensive line, I do think he would score somewhat more. I'll never forget the moment when he was sprung on a breakaway in Tampa in the 2015 series. I immediately thought "I glad this is Fast getting the breakaway instead of Nash." Seconds later, he scored. There is absolutely no reason to think about getting rid of him for about 10 years. There is always a spot on the roster for a guy like this.

EXACTLY! Watch any replay on a goal on which he did not get an assist and chances are you will see him creating a turnover 15 seconds earlier, or stopping an opponent from creating a turnover, or some crafty board work, or, as in the video above, turning an indecisive face-off into a won draw.

If I were in the market for a personalized Rangers jersey, I get one of his. BTW, 6:00 clip of that replay is a still a little too short. Need to find one where the goal is played a few more times (just can't get enough of Holtbe's dying dive, looks like he was shot). Like that rare song that you just never get sick off no matter how many times you have heard it.

This is true for most goals though. Someone had to get the puck, somewhere lol

Whats with the Fast love fest? Hes alright. Id have traded him for a 3rd rounder if it were on the table at the deadline. Hes not exactly an essential part of a team. I guess as a pk specialist, but otherwise, hes not much more special than any other 4th liner.

He can't slot up in a scoring role. If he could, the Rangers would have done so years ago, solving scoring depth issues. He is what he is. An undersized fourth liner...

    This. He's fine...

But being "able to slot up" means that the team just isn't that good. I'd love to have some legit 1st and 2nd liners so Fast can play his role in the bottom 6, killing penalties, and trying hard.

obviously he's no star or anything, but he fills his role as well as anyone else we would reasonably get for it, and he's signed to a very reasonable salary with a few years left. No need to trade him just a pick and open up a hole on the roster
