Who's doing this?

I've got an Echo dot, may add a Google Home, with TP-Link outlets and a Nest Thermostat.

I really want to keep adding to automate everything (locks, TV, etc), is anyone here automating their home?

Have you seen Google wifi? You get 3 routers for $150 and you can daisy chain them to blanket your house in wifi to eliminate dead zones. https://madeby.google.com/wifi/

Also don't the Google Home and Echo effectively do the same thing?

There's a gap in what products each work with, and I believe there will be exclusivity deals in the future. So to have the best products, you have to have both devices controlling them.

Plus, we're an Android house, so there's something to be said for that account integration.

Right. I just figured it might get a little confusing having 2 "always-on" listening devices.

I'd like to eventually have a connected home but since I'm renting for the foreseeable future I doubt I'll get anything beyond Google Home or Echo

They have different "wake up" words. :)
