Do you know anyone who has done LASIK surgery?

I am going for consultation in a month, and I'm excited and anxious at the same time. I'm hoping I'm able to do it because I'm sick of wearing glasses and putting contacts (especially since soft gels hurt my eyes too).

Things making me anxious:

1) Price. Although, I can pay half of it on the spot through these bonds I was gifted when I was younger. Other half might get financed for a year, I don't think it'll be much of an issue. $5,000 was a quote from one doctor (two recommendations) and $5,970 from 3 recommendations for another doctor. Pricey, but it could be worth it in the long run.

2) Pain/Efficiency. I am hoping it's not painful and that it is efficient, but that's what the consultation is. I'm just getting anxiety and hoping my doctor leads me in the right direction and is honest. I've been recommended a few doctors like mentioned before so I'm not entirely worried about efficiency but everyone is different, so I'm hoping the consult goes 100% and he can be 100% certain that I am a candidate.

Do you know anyone who has done LASIK and how was it? I read that it doesn't really matter what your prescription is, as long as you don't have astigmatism (if I spelled that correctly) or thin corneas.

My grandpa had cataract surgery two weeks ago and he mentioned lasers being involved, but I don't know if it involved the same type of LASIK. I do know that it fully corrected his vision and he now has 20/20 vision and for the first time in his life he doesn't need to wear glasses. He had no complaints about the process after being incredibly nervous going in, just that he hates the eye drops and struggles to do it himself since he lives alone.

Don't you want to do LASIK when you're older? I could have sworn that was the conventional wisdom.

Financially speaking, unless you have a medical condition that demands it, not sure why you would do this. Let's say contact lenses cost you $200 per year (assuming you have decent insurance) and eye exams cost you $50 per year. It'll take you 20 years for you to break even on the cost of the LASIK (assuming a $5000 cost). Why burden yourself with the debt of paying for this surgery now? Especially when, if I recall correctly, you have a wedding and an engagement ring to pay for?

I don't do well with contacts. I've tried the two weeks for 4 years now and I stop wearing them because they constantly hurt my eyes. I could do the one day throw out lenses, but those are more expensive for some reason. I think I see how much of a difference it would make for small things and I just really want to go through with it.

Also, you can be 24-25 and do it. You just have to have a history of non-changing prescription which lately my eyes haven't changed.

My issue is that I really have bad vision so I have to put contacts for anything...exercise, swimming, wearing my damn sunglasses that I have (not spending on prescription sunglasses).

I didnt have LASIK but I had Custom PRK done, I didnt qualify for LASIK. Best decision ever. Lasik they cut the top layer, pull it back, laser the eye, and put back the top layer and recoop time is like a day. Custom PRK, they had to remove the top layer, laser the eye, and let the top layer rejuvenate itself, which was like 3-5 days of recoop that felt like their was sand in my eyes. Its glorious waking up and being able to see the clock. I had it done about 10 years ago, I think at that time I paid something like $6000.

Damn, alright. I noticed prices really didn't drop in 10 years. Thought they might. PRK seems a lot more brutal. It's something I really, really want to do. If I'm qualified, it's going to be a difficult decision for me because of finances, but something I've been dying to do.

My gf needs the surgery, but you need to have stabilized vision for a period of 1-2 years, or so, but her vision is constantly degrading.

My eye doctor had told me my eyesight has been pretty stable for the past 2-3 years, I just have to go through some more exams and testings with the LASIK specialist which I'll be doing. I guess I'll make the decision when the time comes.
