Might have to go a little lower, since Torts also had the lockout season.

edit: actually, Nah. Torts was here for a long time lol

Was also just the second year for:
    Lundqvist
    Tyutin
    Betts
    Hollweg

Who were they looking to? Jagr wasn't much of a leader, nor Nylander or Straka.. I geel as though the teams mindset was built around Shanahans attitude more so than the guys Sather phased out 2 years later. Not that Shanahan stayed long... Yet, imo it seemed like he left more of a stamp on the teams core.
None of those players were impact or focal points of the team back then. It wasn't a young team. The only player in that list who was an impact was Lundqvist.
    Jagr 34
    Nylander 34
    Straka 34
    Cullen 30
    Aaron Ward 34
    Kasper 34
    Malik 31

Dubinsky played 6 games that year. Dawes played 8 games. Callahan played 14. Girardi played 34. As you said Staal wasn't even on the team yet. The Rangers weren't an infant team, like say the Oilers have been.

AV really hasn't changed anything other than depth guys and role players
The most notable losses for AV thus far, IMO, have been

St. Louis (wait and see situation)
Richards (locker room impact, even if on-ice wasn't justified for price)
    Strålman (top 4, reliable D)
    Pouliot (top-6 forward)
    Hagelin (wait and see situation)
    Callahan (team captain, top-6 forward)
Talbot (reliable back-up, wait and see)

I agree with that list, and I'd add Brian Boyle even though I think he sucks lol. But notable doesn't necessarily mean valuable, and it certainly doesn't mean core. I don't think any of those guys were even in the top 6 at the time of their departure and, sans Callahan, I don't think they're missed in the locker room.

Stralman was the best of the bunch but, in terms of success, we didn't really miss him.

Well, when I say notably, I mean players of significant impact. That's why I didn't include Brian Boyle, simply because he was only a fourth-line center (despite his playoffs success).

We have no way of knowing for certain if any are missed in the room, so I won't even go down that path. To me, that's a kin to us judging what makes a player a good captain or not. We're not actually there to see it or hear it or experience it, so it's silly to assume we have a clue as to how well or not well they are doing the job.

There are three wait-and-see situations yet to flesh out, but even if they weren't in the top-six at the time of their departure, we've seen in the past how even losing a guy on your fourth line, or a guy who "only kills penalties", etc. can in fact strongly damage the team. Brandon Prust, Brian Boyle, Anton Strålman... maybe Carl Hagelin?

Shit. I don't know why I thpught Dubinsky played more that season and not in the year Gomez came aboard.. But now I remember it better. Dubinsky played with Jagr the following year. I apologize.

But still. Their rookie year was the following year, and they all were impact players in bigger roles. Most of them took the jobs away from the vets late in the season of 06. Hence why they played in the playoffs. So, IN 07 not 06, they were a young team. Shanahan was still here...

Ok... but this wasn't by choice. If anything, these are moves AV doesn't want made. This isnt AV shaping his team by sending guys out of town. The salary cap, and free agency is what made these moves. Arent we discussing how coaches shaped their teams? I dont see that as the case with AV as of now. Nor do I see it possible to do so going forward slammed against the cap.

I don't see how that's unpopular. Many fans, including myself, believe it to be true. Pretty clear Messier never touched that puck to me. No clue how that was never changed.

Depends who you ask. I know a lot of people still in denial.

And really, there's no conclusive evidence either way.

I actually wonder what Noonan thinks about it, or if he even cares.
