That's excellent news. Good job by Gorton and Co. Glad we got a sub-$7 number for Steps.

Nice, this is a great deal, and right on track with what we all were saying it would be.

That's a nice contract right there. Going to look even better a few years from now.

They met pretty much right in the middle of both asking prices. Probably what should've been expected. The deal was never going to be over $7M.

I don't think it was a great deal, but considering the market it was a fair deal. I'm happy that this avoided arbitration and we locked him up long term.

Hows that line about negotiations work — it's a great deal when both sides aren't happy? I can't imagine either side is terribly happy with this. They're content. And that's the sign of a good deal. Stepan could have made more. Rangers could have had him for less (had they signed him years back). All-in-all this is a number they can both work with effectively going forward. It's guaranteed money and security for Stepan at a range figure commensurate with his position and the $6.5M AAV is very workable for the Rangers front-office.

Over a full season he was pacing 66 points last season. If he can do it over an entire year, it's a solid market-value deal, plus buying four years of free agency. If he starts to decline in the last two years when he's 30 and 31, we're still good as there's value for players that age.

Damn, thought I'd hit my prediction of 38/6. For that extra mil, I hope he got no more than a 1-2 year NMC/NTC.

    Any word on that?

Not yet, but I'd imagine he'l have a combination of both. Likely similar to the Girardi/Staal contracts where it's a full no-move in the first three years followed by a partial no-trade in the final three. Would explain why he's coming in below $7M annually. NMC/NTC are a form of currency in negotiations.
