Yea the mid-AM wake up is the suxxor. I'd give a low dose melatonin, like 3mg*, a try (if 5mg is too much grogs the next morning) so you don't have so much groggies later on. (You tried benadryl already right?).

Tough. Like the Josh said, new job, less anxiety would help, unless you can find a way to mentally zen that shit out. I've been there.

Nah Nyquil never did it for me either. Benedryl is the same thing in those OTC sleep meds like "Simply Sleep" or whatevever. That stuff works!!! 2 Benedryls and youll be out like a light. Might be a little groggy and especially a little irritable tomorrow but for the sake of getting through the night it's plenty worth it.

Work for the railroad which is extremely demanding and military driven. I'm sure since my personal life has become more demanding, this job has become a lot tougher and seems to never stop.

I've battled this for years. The ONLY thing I've found that helps .... helps not cures .... is do not eat anything after 8pm or drink anything other than water.

Exercise, even walking for 30min or more a day is key too.

Ive been battling insomnia as well for years. I'm on a prescription for Ambien which i only take on the days i work. It's helped. My biggest problem is that if i wake up in the middle of the night, i rarely get a second chance of sleep. It's called Sleep Anxiety. Basically i stress about the concept of sleeping and my brain never goes into full REM mode when sleeping, so once i wake up regardless of what time, i'm done.

A few things have helped me though. White noise is top of the list. I use a fan because I also like the feel of the wind even if it's winter outside. I also use the sleep mode on my tv as im laying down and set it for 90-120 minutes and keep the volume on low. I tend to put on a lot of documentaries on netflix or a hockey game that i've seen before from Gamecenter or a classic game from there that is commercial free. Reason is that sometimes commercials change in volume compared to the actual program. Also, the reason behind it being something i've already seen is that its not a surprise that would peak your interest and wake u up. A lot of times i'll watch the cup run from 94 on dvd. It's a nostalgic moment and something that keeps my mind off of the idea of sleeping.

Another thing i don't recommend is sitting on the pc and getting up waiting to feel tired. I personally find that would just wake me up moreso than help me feel tired. I try getting to the bed and start my routine around 30 minutes or so before i actually sleep. I also dont keep clocks really visible as well, keep my bedroom fairly clean and neat since i feel more comfortable if things aren't in total disarray, and make sure my phone is on silent so i won't get an email or text that wakes me up.

If you are going to do the OTC sleeping remedies such as NyQuil, you should just take Unisom. You can get the generic one from Target for a lot cheaper than paying for Unisom itself. Look for the one that has diphenhydramine 50 mg and not 25mg since the 50 will work better.
