Nearly 120,000 units of digital currency bitcoin worth about $72 million was stolen from the exchange platform Bitfinex in Hong Kong, rattling the global bitcoin community in the second-biggest security breach ever of such an exchange.
Bitcoin plunged just over 23 percent on Tuesday after the news broke.
On Wednesday it was up 1 percent at $545.20 on the BitStamp platform.
Zane Tackett, Bitfinex’s director of community and product development, said on Wednesday that 119,756 bitcoin had been stolen from users’ accounts and that the exchange had not yet decided how to address customer losses.

    $2803.55

This is getting stupid. A bunch of people with economics degrees and serious faces have said they expect bitcoin to eventually hit $100,000. That will be really insane if anyone bought at $0.05 and held all the way through to to $100,000 (basically turned a hundred dollar bill into $200,000,000.00, yes - a fifth of a billion dollars)

The best time to buy was when the facebook/winkelvioss twins got denied their application for a listed bitcoin ETF. the price crashed to high $700's, then it went straight up to $2800 in like a month.

In any valuable resource the main factor driving price is scarcity. Bitcoin is all about scarcity because the maximum number of bitcoins that there can ever be in existence is 21 million (they're at about 16.5 million now). Plus you have all the lost bitcoins from permanently forgotten passwords, so if it's going to be used a global currency then there's very little of to go around for 7 billion people.

The big question is how capable is it of working in a mass market. Right now the answer is not very well. There's a fundamental limit to the number of transactions the system can handle, it's already clogged. When you pay a merchant, it takes 6 broadcast confirmations to the whole network before the seller accepts your bitcoin to be sure it wasn't double spent. Last time I paid for something it took f'ing 20 hours to happen.

I don't know if they're going to find a solution to speed things up. There are competitors like eretheum but bitcoin is the name brand first mover everybody knows and likes.

Bottom line is nobody knows where the price is going, but if you pinned me down for an answer I'd say it's more likely to see $5000 sooner than $1000

Other than the NBA, I can't think of a less interesting topic that gets as much attention as Bitcoin.

    less interesting??? lol

listen, a bunch of programmers figured out how to turn 16 million equations into 45 billion dollars. If creating 45 billion dollars out of thin air isn't interesting to you then I don't know what to tell you
