Maybe you saw him after he ate this kid as part of his new diet:

Donnay is having a very nice season in the OHL. After being a -39 last season he is a +26 this season and has a new career high with 12 points in just 47 games. Being as tall as he is he might develop late, still just 19. Good to see.

You could blindfold me and have me step onto the ice in sandals and I'd still be a + player for this Erie Otters team. Yet another example of why plus/minus is an awful stat. That being said, he is improved from last season. He's a massive project and is going to need 3+ years in the minors but could become a player like Matt Carkner except useful defensively.

Plus/Minus is a HUGE stat when looked at properly.
And in this case you can. From one of the worst on his team, and in the league....to top 5 or 6 on this team.

Yeah, when looked at properly. If he's a minus on a team as stacked as this, it's obviously telling. If he's a huge plus on this team, it doesn't tell us much. It tells us he's on the ice for a lot of goals and his team features some of the top scorers in Canadian Juniors at the moment. Erie is 3rd in the OHL in goals scored.

He's had a plus minus difference of around 60 from last year. That is not only huge, but rather telling.
Fact is he's still in the same league, same team.

Last year he was a huge liability, one of the worst in the league.
This year he no longer is.

That's how you read it properly.
    It's development and steps.

    Ultimately, it's eyeballs.

We had a guy, we traded him, he went from -20 to +20 and folks said he didn't improve. So...There's that.

That is where the issue comes up.
    Player A on Team A- +20
    Player B on Team B- -20

    Comparing applies to oranges.
I'm pretty sure some of Gretzky's teammates had outstanding plus/minus

But, same player, from year to year in same league, PLUS comparing difference as to how he compares to his team, (and league).
It's pretty obvious this kid started to get a clue in his zone.

Yeah. It tells us that last year the Erie Otters were the second worst team in the OHL and this season they're arguably the best junior team in all of Canada.

And his improvement within the team?
Like I said, there is a reason the plus/minus Is used.

Used by whom? It was used 20 years ago when there was nothing better. So were floppy disks. Brian Burke was recently on a statistics panel and acknowledged that plus/minus is a "useless" stat and that almost nobody in the pro hockey world acknowledges it anymore.

Then what is the defensive statistic that is being used to show who really is sound defensively?

A handful of them. Corsi, Fenwick, QualComp Rel are a few of them. I recommend looking them up if you don't know what they are.

Dave Nonis also said they don't put much stock in advanced stats either, there's a lot of data collected and no one knows how to use.
