Namestnikov Signing "Probably Means the End" for Ryan Spooner

Namestnikov?s signing probably means the end for Ryan Spooner, the salary arbitration-eligible restricted free-agent winger who put up 16 points (4-12) in 20 games after coming to Broadway from Boston in the deadline-proximate deal for Rick Nash. The question is whether Gorton will seek (or be able) to bring back a more robust roster player in his place or whether the GM will look to get a draft pick as the exchange. If the latter, the Rangers would do well if it?s as high as a second-rounder.

Talk about a nothing burger. I get excerpting the other Brooks items, but if I started a thread with an unsupported random sentence of the day, without any further explanation, I'd expect you to be critical.

OK I'll humor Brooks. Why?

No really, why does signing Names mean the end of Spoon? How about supporting an editorial statement like that with some kind of follow up sentence, a rationale.

[sidenote: most of the article was fine, but this is an example of my issue with Brooks. the constant definitive statements w/o a rationale or any support as to why or how he arrived at significant conclusions. Essentially the reader has to imagine why. IOW, what does he think the Rangers are doing with Spoons? Does he mean he will 100% be traded? That would be news then. It deserves more than his typical fly by.]

Namestnikov can play up and down the line up, C or W.

Spooner can play in his own end, needs to be with skilled players to be successful, and his days at center seem to be over.

I always viewed Spooner as a potential Zuccarello replacement. But Zucc wasnt moved.

Also dont know what the market for Spooner would be, at this point. He's been on the block for his entire career.

Sign him to a 1yr deal, try to move him at the deadline, if nothing is worked out over the summer.

torontonyr, we didn't sign a F or add a kid ready to challenge except maybe Meskanen. Who exactly is pushing Spooner out? If he comes out of the gate scoring points under a 2/3 year contract, after ending like he did last year, he'll be valuable.

You all are ready to sell for peanuts. I'd rather let Quinn sort it out. We did not sign any FAs and dumped vets. We have a new coach, let him sort through some talent that are older than 19.

But the problem is that Namestnikov didn’t produce last year when he came here, and was basically invisible while Spooner did thrive here. Didn’t Spooner play the wing here as well?

Yeah, I don't see how he comes to this conclusion. This isn't the first time he suggested that the Rangers pretty much walk away from Spooner. I might be wrong, but didn't he even suggest not tendering him? Maybe Larry doesn't like Spooner?

I'm excited to see this guy play here.

Again, not sure why people think he doesn't want to play center anymore. He never said that.

Right on. Until we can get something we value, let's see the guy play. Let the coach and player have the most to do with the future. If he has a good first half he will have value, especially after ending well. We can move one or two of these vets during the season as circumstances dictate. Might as well let things shake out this fall.

Yes.

But based on position of the organization, it may be better to put younger guys in position to get those offensive chances.

I have no issue keeping him for a year, but no sense committing long term

He's 26. Not like hes old. Why's everyone so down on this kid?

I remember reading a piece on Spooner on BSB. His pointscoring mask some pretty horrific underlying stats. Iirc we're talking about terrible shot and scoring chance differentials. Like one of the worst in the league bad.

I'm with you guys though, I don't really see who takes his place in the roster as it stands. And I'm not really sure what he gets us in a potential trade. I don't see anybody giving up a good prospect for him. Maybe a pick.

Sure. That’s why guys like Kessel gets away with it.

There isn’t a lot of evidence to suggest Spooner can put up the sort of numbers that allows a guy to be a total defensive non entity however. Certainly not when the team he plays for has severe defensive issues across the board.

I like him though, and I think this roster needs a guy like him. Just making the point that there are underlying factors to consider when deciding which way to go with him.

I would way prefer his style of play to Names.

He attacks the middle of the rink where as Names was completely on the perimeter the whole time.

I mean as a third line winger or PP specialist he's fine. I wouldn't suggest him playing important minutes.

I also think a defense that competent enough to get the puck up to the forwards more reliably that last year will help the underlying stats, along with O-zone starts.

Perfectly said. He was a far better player than Names was here, and he is good on face-offs, which this team needs. He would be good working with Andersson on his wing, and it also gives them another option on draws if Andersson is having a rough time.

Ditto you re: Kevin Hayes?

Im not down on Hayes, I just don't want to be locked in long term with him and paying what he is going to get. We have some good young centers finally, we need to make room for them somehow. Plus, Hayes should be able to get us more than Spooner will.

Right, he's versatile, can win faceoffs and showed some excellent playmaking and passing skills here, even in that mess. He's flashed his talent in Boston and was slowed by an injury. He played better before injury and after recovery. He'll do nothing but increase his trade value if he can maintain a similar scoring pace this year. The guy is moving into his prime, not leaving it.

Because Spooner isn't going to get a 5 year contract and be glued in as the 2nd line center. Spooner will be cheaper and I feel can contribute something similar on offense. Definitely not on D. But I see a youngster eventually grabbing that role.

I don’t think Hayes will be glued to 2C. He’s a good option. I think we all hope Chytil, Lias, Howden etc jump him on the depth chart.

If you see the Cs being signed/traded now, it shouldn’t be an issue unless he goes all jimmy Hayes on us

I feel if he's not glued to 2C, he's glued to 3C. He and Namestnikov have those spots nailed down if both are here. Gives Chytil, Andersson and Howden the 4th line. Yayyyyyyy
