@svtlehmann: SKA St Petersburg captain Ilya Kovalchuk dismissed from team and won't play tomorrow. No words yet on his future.

Coming back to NHL? How does that even work since he retired?

Since he filed voluntary retirement papers, he would require approval from all 30 NHL teams to get back into the League or else he would need to sit out of hockey for a full season and then get the Devils’ permission to return.

If he waited until he turned 35 in the 2018-19 season, he could return without any approval.

@IgorEronko:
#SKA coaching staff layed Ilya Kovalchuk off team practices due to poor performance.

Fan tweeted at Igor and asked him if he was off the team and the response was "not yet."

Interesting situation underway.

Even if he comes back, he's not same player he once was. Not as fast or dynamic.

I bet the Devils beg him to come back lol

Furthering the explanation, SovSport reported that Kovalchuk had "repeated violations of the [training] regime" and "conflicts with the assistant head coach Vladimir Fedosov." Which does not sound captainly.

SKA won Game 2 without Kovalchuk, 3-2, in which they nearly blew a 3-goal lead. Speculation was that Kovalchuk’s scratch would be a one-time shock to the system. But Sports Express reports on Wednesday that Kovalchuk will not play in SKA’s home games (Games 3 on Thursday, and Game 4 on Sunday) and that he has been stripped off the captaincy by the team.

Wow.

The Russian news site claims that Kovalchuk’s future with the team “is still under question.”

Please keep in mind that that per the CBA, and due to Kovalchuk’s retirement, he basically has three options for an NHL return.

1. Kovalchuk would need approval from all 30 NHL teams, due to his voluntary retirement, to return to the NHL right this second.

2. If Kovalchuk were to sit out of hockey for a calendar year, he would only need the New Jersey Devils’ consent to return to the NHL, as he’s on the voluntary retired list and last played for that club. Which means he could sign with the Devils. Or, most likely, they'd trade his rights away.

3. Kovalchuk plays internationally until he turns 35 (April 15, 2018), and then is dropped from the voluntary retired list and becomes an unrestricted free agent.

As Igor Eronko wrote, Kovalchuk’s return to the NHL before he’s 35 is “practically impossible.”

What does "sit out of hockey for a calendar year" mean? Like he can't even play in some bullshit league in Denmark for a whole year? How does an NHL contract control that?

It appears Ilya Kovalchuk could be one step closer to returning to the NHL.

Just one day after SKA St. Petersburg reportedly stripped Kovalchuk of his captaincy, KHL writer Aivis Kalnins reports Kovalchuk is threatening to leave the team.

:tweet: @A_Kalnins: Kovalchuk has told SKA that if he's not on roster in two days time he's terminating his contract and heading to North America

If Kovalchuk does choose to return to the NHL in 2016, the move would need to be approved by all 30 NHL teams because Kovalchuk signed his voluntary retirement papers when he left the NHL.

Threatens to leave the team... What a loser. It's his own damn fault he was scratched from what I've been reading. Dude throws a tempter tantrum and gives an ultimatum? Hopes some GM here tells him to go fuck himself.

No way all 30 teams approve him.

He has a player termination option in his contract? That seems...odd.

No way all 30 teams approve him.

If they allow him to return, they've said that a player can leave the NHL while under contract, go play in another league, leave that league while under contract and come back to the NHL. Unlikely.

I'd let him back in. My heart tells me to tell him to fuck off but my head says the NHL still strives to have the best players in the world play here. I'm not sure he qualifies as one of the best anymore but I would allow an NHL team to find that out if they wanted him. I can't believe that he doesn't turn 35 until 2018. I thought for sure he was already past that and closer to 38 lol.

Report: Kovalchuk will play in China next season

The Ilya Kovalchuk saga has taken another strange twist. It seems like Kovalchuk will be leaving SKA Saint Petersburg to join another team. According to a report out of Moscow, Kovalchuk will join the KHL’s Chinese expansion team next season.
