I agree, and if anything, this shows the guy does have talent, but like Burns said, he chooses to defend his players instead. The fact that you have this many star players that were excited for him and to be playing with him shows how valuable a guy like him is in this league. The fans don't see it, but the players love him and love guys like him. Players like him keep teams loose and relaxed. I would love to see the guy back in the NHL because they need more players like him with his personality and heart in this league and all of sports.

Phil in Absentia
01-31-2016, 08:56 PM
Yeah, I never bought the whole "worst player in the league" thing. Even if he is, the worst player in the NHL is still an NHL player. Still a million times more talented than any of us sitting here typing about how bad he is, from the comfort of our couch.

That was my point as well. It's all relative. I've had enough ECHL/AHL stay at home defencemen make me look silly to know anyone in the actual NHL is ridiculously good relative to us. Even John Scott.

You don't. I'm speaking to talent level, not the ability to be critical of it.

Scott is more talented than any of us, but that doesn't redact our ability to criticize his abilities based on what we know of the game, the NHL, the marketing of hockey in the U.S. and Canada, etc.

So even if someone is far more talented, it's cool to say they suck... So what's the problem?

I agree, this was a feel good story about an underdog that made me watch the game for a little, nothing more.

If you ask me, you're downplaying it. Yes, it was an underdog story, but it was Hollywood movie level story-telling that occurred.

The 3-on-3 was a welcome refresh, but Scott made this weekend. Beyond any shadow of doubt IMO. I'm sure the league will thump their chests and talk up the format, format, format when the ratings come in, but without them playing the villain and the grassroots efforts to get Scott to this game, they don't have as many eyes on this game as they did, even if they stood to have a few more because of the format change.

I think Scott drove the bus here, and I don't want to hear any more bullshit from Roenick or Milbury or any of the media talking heads blabbering about how this is only a select few "elitist" internet fans. Tell that to the stadium full of people chanting "M-V-P".

I'd have checked it out too, simply because I was interested in seeing how the 3-on-3 format played out. But Scott made sure I didn't miss a moment. He had me cheering out loud when he scored and when the fans were chanting "M-V-P" for him.

What I'm saying is that the league was probably going to see a boost in viewership regardless this year based on the format, but when this whole Scott thing went down, I think it floored the gas pedal for anyone who was on the fence about tuning in. Especially when his Players' Tribune article went out.

Bottom line IMO was this. When was the last ASG you rooted hard for a player yo have an impact and you werent 12 years old? Lol. The game its self, a 1-0 game among all-stars, isn't good, its boring. You watch all-star games for the goals and seeing the skill of goal scorers since that is usually what its consisted of. This game itself was kind of boring, but Scott is what made this game. I honestly had no interest in watching this because these games just got really boring lately. Once the issues with Scott came around, I wanted to watch to see how it turned out, and I doubt I am the only person who felt that way. An high ratings would be simply because of the John Scott situation and the fact that he proved a lot of people wrong.

Man I have to say CBC's broadcast of the game was fucking pathetic.

Constantly missing live goals especially on breakaways cause they had to cutaway to a replay of some dumb celebrity coach on the bench. But the worst part of the broadcast was definitely the commentating and in particular Glen Healy and Damien Cox. Healy couldn't stop talking about how pathetic Scott and his celebrations were. It was awkward and embarrassing about how the only thing he could focus on was belittling Scott. Then Cox making a fucking crude joke about who the fans will write in next year by suggesting Raffi Torres and Matt Cooke. Seriously you fat fuck...comparing John Scott to Torres and Cooke?!

Sounds like the NBC analysts shared the same opinion of the CBC ones. Seriously what is with some of these retired guys insinuating constantly that it was an embarrassment or disgrace for John Scott to be out there? It's like it was the only thing the could highlight in the whole broadcast. Glen Healy must have a pretty big inferiority complex or something...guy was one of the most pathetic goaltenders ever.

Well...Think about that. Being an All-Star in the NHL is something that guys like Roenick worked very hard to be the absolute best in the league for...And now they see John Scott there with as many ASG playing appearances as Sidney Crosby. It's just a little bit silly.

It wound up being a feel-good story, but in reality it never should have happened.

Yeah I could definitely tell a few of them sounded resentful...as if they're these elite ambassadors of the game and here's a scrub playing in an ASG reserved for the very best. That's great but keep that opinion to your personal blogs, Twitters etc. not when you're representing the entire league on a national broadcast. It's just uncomfortable and out of place when they go on and on about it. The John Scott jokes got old about a minute into the Skills Competition.

I agree, well said. They still need to be professional.

This is all true but remember, it's not the CBC, it's Rogers.

I watched the Canadian broadcast in hopes of avoiding certain terribleness of the NBC style broadcast only to find that the Canadians were doing their best NBC impression. There was actually action and tension in the games this time, so the "Tell whatever story or interview someone because who cares what is happening on the ice" approach was even more noticeably bad.
