From beautiful Helsinki, Finland.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_World_Junior_Ice_Hockey_Championships

Aleksi Saarela (FIN), Brandon Halverson (USA), Adam Huska (SLK) and Sergei Zborovski (RUS) are the Ranger picks involved.

Every roster looks weaker than normal. Not a lot of sex appeal. Most rosters outside of Canada look very young.

Talk your smack here.

You and I spoke two years ago that this year would be one of the strongest in many years for team USA
Not sure what happened, but once again it's a rather going team.
Finland had a very strong draft year coming up, that I know.

And obviously this summer looks to be the strongest NHL draft of US born players ever (central scouting I think has the top 4 ranked players as American). Of the 34 A rated players, 12 or 13 are American and 14 Canadian.

That being said, Canada still had the deepest roster.

for seemingly the 20th year in a row Canada doesn't have a goalie. That could be trouble.

Canada had 6-1 lead against Sweden last night that they completely blew it in the 3rd. Something crazy always seems to happen when it's kids involved.

I've also finally lived to see a local kid make Team Canada in Roland McKeown.

Sweden is better then you would think though this season. Many have them favored.
Why's surprising is that it just may be goaltending that holds them back.

With Sweden Canada needs to play 5 on 5 and stay away from special teams

Sadly I think the guy I'm gonna be watching for the most is Huska. Halverson's been kind of atrocious this year, I admittedly don't know shit about Zborovski, and I guess I'm intrigued to see what Saarela can do. Anyone know who the starting goalies are yet? Like do we know Halverson's and Huska's roles on their respective teams?

Good game
Pretty even teams, difference was goaltending
USA pretty strong up and down the ice
Canada strong deep in both ends

I think Canada needs to stop looking to make the fancy pas down low. Drive the net and force the Americans out of the passing lanes. Once Americans are forced to respect that it opens up passing lanes

Puck Head
12-26-2015, 03:52 PM
I'm almost happier about who's not playing for USA
- Jack Eichel
- Noah Hanifin
- Dylan Larkin

All eligible but making contributions at NHL level
Typically it's a team Canada problem to have

Bodes well in the big picture

Dunny
12-26-2015, 04:31 PM
Missing NHL guys used to bug me, but it's pretty good unintentional parity. It's already bad enough that they allow the bottom 2 teams in this thing.

This is a pretty weak Canadian entry but assuming the the goaltending doesn't completely collapse under the pressure they should be able to easily get to the semi's. Then we'll see what happens.

Dunny
12-26-2015, 04:44 PM

We're, that game was about as close as it could be, even outside outside the goaltending.

And Sweden also charged back to tie it 6-6
They have some firepower and USA shit that down today.

I know most promising Ukrainian youngsters head to Russia, but it's still a surprising drop off.

Honestly? They don't. That's not to say they can't produce the odd good player, but on the whole the program looks like it's in shambles. It looks like they'll avoid relegation to Div. 2 (Netherlands, Estonia etc) but doesn't look like promotion is in the cards.

Click on the Wiki link I provided in the OP, pretty neat to follow the lesser divisions.
