As we passed along last week, the Florida Panthers are getting new duds for the 2016-17 campaign.

More, from the Herald’s George Richards:

From what I’ve been told, my latest idea of the ‘101st Airborne’ patch/logo/shield is apparently on mark.

Instead of an eagle, a Panther head will adorn the front of the jersey.

And the Panther head is a complete change from what the team has used before. The new Panther is said to look more natural, like the big cats who roam the Everglades.

The Canadiens’ style horizontal stripe across the jersey is what they’re going with.

The biggest change in the color palate apparently is blue is being minimized, red is the signature color and the yellow gold is going to be a much deeper gold.

Did they not just change uniforms 5 years ago? Do they think rebranding is gonna make new fans?

Re-branding actually can make new fans. If you time it right, it's a brilliant marketing ploy. Just look at Dallas right now post Seguin-trade with what is being called the "Victory Green" rebrand. It's synnonymous with Seguin, Benn, Klingberg, etc. The longterm future of the most exciting franchise in hockey right now.

So if the Cats were smart, they'd do the same to run along side Bjugstad, Huberdeau, Barkov and Ekblad. Maybe Gudbranson to a lesser degree. Plenty there to be excited about if you are a Panthers fan.

And you know who else is about to do this? The Toronto Maple Leafs. With names like Nylander, Marner, Kapanen, Reilly and maybe Auston Mathews.

The Stars have a history of success and so do the Leafs, they have already established fans. Florida is trying to establish something on a bedrock made of toilet paper.

Also not true. They drew quite well when they first came into the league and especially the year they made the run to the Eastern Final.

Like the Coyotes (same deal, minus a run to the Conference Final), they slowly lost that fanbase over a decade or more of embarrassment, topped off with the cherry of not making the playoffs.

If/when the Panthers make it back to the playoffs, you'll see a surge in popularity, as you would in any other market (now that Atlanta is gone).

It would also help if they had things to do near their arena, which they apparently don't.

The arena is extremely far from Miami and quite a bit a way from Ft. Lauderdale. Only thing to do near the arena is go to Sawgrass Mills Mall, at least they do have a couple of bars there.

Whatever. They could have the coolest unis in the league and they'd still be the same irrelevant suckwags that they've always been.

Careful not to cut yourself on all that edge.
